SOTR and Tanks
« on: 02 March 2012, 05:59:06 PM »
I've noticed that everyone in the posted AARs for SOTR seem to use nothing but weak early war tanks. I have seen MKIs, 38ts, and T26s. Why no Shermans, or Mark IVs?

Thats because the heavier stuff costs more requesition points in SOTR and if you have  for an example: a tiger you wouldnt have much more points on inf or other support options. I think

Maybe its because tanks can be a bit 'all or nothing' in SotTR, if your opponents regularly field enough AT you may not get your 'points-worth' on an expensive investment. However, smaller, nippier mg multiple mg armed vehicles can be excellent points-wise as the can throw out a ton of anti-personel fire for few points. On the flipside, if your opponents don't have much AT, a more powerful tank can be effective. Much the same can be said of using mechs, except that you have more flexibility in their loadout given the design rules.
Basically I'd say play using bigger (or more) tanks for the fun of it rather than strictly for their competitative value (now then, where's that E-100 & JS-3?.....).

I believe it has alot to do with resource points costs. Most SOTR 1949 games seem to be played at the 50/55 RP range. A Royal Tiger costs 26RP, which will leave you with a much smaller sized force. This tank will either dominate the game (not fun for your opponent), or get blown up on the first turn (not fun for you!). If you and your opponent have the models, using the "big boys" in larger point games is a better option. That being said, fighting a Centurian Mk II with Para support against a JS III supported by Koschei the Deathless, and a Guards Armored Infantry squad is pretty freaking cool!  :-*

As previously mentioned, it is usually down to the cost of the vehicle and what weapons it carries.  In SOTR the HMG is king, so cheap fast small tanks with a HMG are more cost effective than say a Tiger or Jagdpanther.

Predominately most go with designing a small, medium armoured mech with HMG and as you can group 3 small mechs together for one unit, again the cost outways spending on large heavy tanks.

I have competed in just about all the SOTR tournaments and tanks are rarly fielded.  The exception is the Russian T34 as is an absolute steal!

OK a Tiger costs too much. How much is a Sherman or a MK IV?

Light and Medium tanks and SPG's are most fun. Heavy armor stuff make the game boring, be it tank or mecha. Based upon countless games the same thing has been experienced, heavy armor units are either indestructible or get damaged/blown up by a lucky shot -in either case making for a boring game. Medium and Light vehicles are cheaper and don't ruin your game if they get destroyed - and aren't as prone to dominating the battlefield either.

Really heavy stuff like Tiger and Königstiger tanks should be reserved for scenario games rather than regular "tournament" style games where both players have an equal amount of points.

I don't include the points for the armour. I give each side points to spend on everything else then I give them equal amounts of other stuff. I use an upgraded and upgunned Sherman for the allies, it has the same 90mm gun as a Pershing, I call it M4A4E890.
