Ral Partha brass paint
« on: 16 April 2012, 11:40:36 PM »
Many many years ago, when I first started painting minis, I used Ral Partha paints. I was quite happy with them at the time, but of course they have long since been discontinued in North America (I think you can still get them on their website, but you certainly can't buy them locally in any hobby shops!).

Anyway, one metallic colour they used to have was a brassy one. I don't know if it was their "Old Gold" or "Bronze" - there are no colour swatches for the metallics on their website (but I think it was Bronze?).

It was a really nice colour, with a dark golden sheen and a hint of green, just like real brass. GW metallics never had anything like it. Does anybody know of any equivalent in other ranges in North America? I hate to buy online for things as small as one pot of paint, so I go buy locally when I can. I have access to places that sell P3, Tamiya, Vallejo, maaaybe Humbrol? (I think?) Oh and GW of course. Maybe a few others I'm forgetting.

I hear you on missing some of the Ral Partha colours. Until last year, when my last pot of it finally dried up, Ral Partha's Suntanned Skin was my default Caucasian skintone. I've had to adjust how I do skin now that it's gone...

For your brass paint, try Reaper Master Series "Tarnished Brass", perhaps?

http://www.reapermini.com/Paints/corecolors - it doesn't look like you can link to individual colours in the Reaper site anymore, which is a pain. Scroll down until you see Tarnished Brass in the right-hand column.

The Reaper paints are very good quality, as good as GW's old lineup or Vallejo in my experience. Great prices, too, especially if you buy the "Triad" three-packs, which are often shade/base/highlight sets or three related colours. They don't seem to get a lot of notice, though. Not sure why.

(the Master Series paint Triad sets are here)

I think it was called Brass, I have just a small amount left myself. Never found a good substitue either that covered well.
