Advice on British Uniforms in North Africa

I have looked through all the Osprey books for ideas on dress for this theatre and have bought all the Artizan 8th Army and SAS.  It seems that the further from the front lines you were the more orthodox the uniform, so:  I am thinking of moving my Dad's Army figures to become my Cairo Home Guard, I thought that this would work.  Thoughts? It is Pulp anyway, but wanted some legitimate reason to use them.
