The thoughts that come from LAF posts...
« on: 03 June 2012, 02:36:41 AM »
This - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42317.0 - and sundayhero's avatar - has my brain whirling with Superhero American Football rules!

Anyone know if these already exist?  If so it would save me a lot of work!

Gracias,

Glenn

It's what I like in LAF : the emulation between enthusiasts. THis forum is so full of ideas !

COncerning football, As far as I know, there is some boardgame using super strong players :

I don't know if the game stills available (never saw it in France), and if it's a good game (like heroscape, wich was sold in toys stores but "captured" by grown men and women hobbyists). But maybe it's a way you can search for.

You could probably also refer from a classic superheroes ruleset (heroclix, supersystem), and then build some extra rules for sport.

In the same idea, there was a famous (at least, in France) japanese cartoon named "Cobra" (a sort of James BOnd in space, with nice women and aliens) , where the most famous (double) episode was speaking of a brutal sport based on baseball :

I always thought that one day, I would do a minis game like that.

the most difficult thing (I'm also thinking about a "static" version of electric football) in my opinion is to simulate, on a competitive point of view, passing and kicking.

Movement based on action points can be easily set up, but passes and kicks is more difficult.

For a fantasy baseball game, it's even more difficult, since you have to simulate piching and batting too.

What are passing and kicking?

Are they not the same as shooting in a combat game?

You pick a 'target' (enemy in combat game, teammate in sporting game) and you try to 'hit' them. Just because you're using a ball (and maybe your feet) it's not fundamentally different to throwing a spear at an enemy.

Tackling = grappling/attacking; intercepting is a kind of opposite of dodging (in a combat game, you want to avoid the thrown weapons; in a sporting game you want to get in the way of the thrown ball).

So the sequence of events is -

1 - player with ball picks friendly target, rolls 'to hit' them, and either 'hits' or fails;
1a) if it's a fail, then there is a 'loose ball' and you can have people running for it;
1b) if it's a 'hit' then the opposing player gets to try and intercept (using dexterity/agility stat or whatever).

For baseball (or cricket), 'pitching' is really the same as shooting.
Batting is more like fighting. But with a random 'where does the ball go?' table.

I can't see how there's anything that doesn't conform to some element of a combat game. If your players have skill-scores (statistics) then you can come up with a formula or a table to calculate anything.

I agree with you : the question is, how make it balanced enough to play it competitive. I'd like a system where the best "coach" wins, not the luckiest on dices/table/whatever.

I see what you mean.

Right, the 'best' way to do that I think is to allow a coach to 'buy' players with different skills/statistics; some will be better at running, some at passing (throwing kicking whatever), some at stopping/blocking/tackling, and some best at confusing the opposition. Some rare players may be good at several things. There may be necessary skills I haven't thought of - depends what the game is, I'm primarily thinking of soccer. But the principle holds good.

The best coach should be able to combine those different skills into a team that beats the averages, taking into account that there must be some random effects happening during the game - I hate games where the best 'list' always wins, that's not a game, it's a piece of maths homework. If you think that the main thing should be the skill of the coach in putting a good team together and using appropriate tactics, then minimise the random elements. If you want a more unpredictable game then increase the random elements.

I'd be happy to help you 'kick around' any ideas you might have.
