Confrontation Lions of Alahan and Wolfen (pic heavy)
« on: 08 June 2012, 06:32:41 PM »
Not sure what started it, but the old Confrontation bug bit me hard this week. I've played exactly one game in the last 6 years and that was only a demo game (he was not impressed, but then again he never rolled over a 3 the entire game, and you can only try so hard to throw it without being obvious if the dice just refuse to let you purposefully lose). But nevertheless,  Confrontation 3 is to this day my favorite skirmish game ever released, not just the figures (which are amazing of course) but the gameplay itself is almost perfect for me and the setting is just great. It's the perfect mix of traditional tolkien/D&D/warhammer style high fantasy with just enough of it's own style to keep it unique. And again the gameplay is everything I want in a skirmish game, the way it handles alternating turns and combat and wounds and everything, I have yet to find a game that does it better.

And so the plastic Wolfen I bought on the cheap for other projects got some new paintwork to make them look presentable. Most of the prepaints are decent enough. in fact they're perfectly acceptable figs unless you start to compare them with the still-amazing old metals figs. Except for the wolfen, who hold up brilliantly against the metals and are even superior in a few cases. So I repainted a few wolfen, but then remembered that a new version of confrontation 3/3.5 is in the works and painted a few more on square bases, and since if I want to actually play anybody I'm gonna have to supply both sides I got out my old Lions of Alahan who had seen better days. 6 years in foam only protects soft lead so much, so a bit of gluing and touch ups (sans one Royal Guards needs a very very small pin in his sword) and we're almost ready to roll out!

The guys that started it all (may be used for some Circle Orboros Tharn Ravagers if nothing else)

A few shots showing the repaints vs the prepaints

And their friends on 40mm square bases, including a converted Crossbow wolfen

Roughly 600 points of Lions of Alahan

Danil the Valiant

Agonn the Ardent

The Royal Guard

Paladins and Archers

Guards of Alahan (aka The Expendables)

Got another 15 or so plastic wolfen Fangs on the bench, some plastic Wolfen characters, Hunters and Predators coming in the mail even though I still have over 20 of the various metal wolfen (god bless ebay, $35 boxes going for $5. Who can resist that?) that may also end up as a Ogre Kingdoms counts-as army at some point. I'm also debating whether to do a few other factions now using stand-ins from other companies, or waiting for the rereleased figs in a few months. Either way, gonna try and get my buddies into confrontation instead of just Warmachine.

Thanks. I've also gotten rid of a fair amount of the figs I used to have, i had a lot of Griffin and Cynwall stuff that has been sold or given away over the years, but these were by far my favorite factions. The Lions were mostly painted back in '06, but digging through my stuff I found the 3 paladins and Danil, which is why their basing is a bit brighter. I think I did a pretty good job of matching the scheme considering my techniques and paints are different to what i did back then. Might have to lighten the sand on the other bases to match as well.

I'm hoping the rest of the Wolfen come in today so I can get that warband finished up, I've got a few more Fangs on round bases done but they're essentially the exact same figures as the ones I first posted. Next I think I'll repurpose some GW and Reaper elves into a Cynwall warband and after that I think some Undead would be fantastic to fight against. Gotta have some bad guys and it gives me a reason to pick up the Wargames Factory skeletons I've been eyeballing for a while now.

Very nice!  Really love your Alahan troops.  Those paladins look tits!

Great stuff. I got a bunch of the prepaint Wolfen in the sales a while back and they do look quite good.

I love Confrontation 2/3 as well.
My collection continues to grow... much slower now as I'm down to a few elusive figures I want to track down.
It is hard though to get other folks to try it, I'm not sure why. Most of the guys I play with like small skirmish games but Confrontation doesn't get on our boards very often.
I've considered maybe firing up an RPG set in Aarklash (probably NOT Cadwallon, though I think it would work fine... maybe use WFRP)... maybe that would kick start their interest (WFRP is what got me interested in the other GW games).

Small update, got the new stuff earlier today. So far just rebased, mold lines cleaned and movable joints glued in place. I'll get some real paint on them tomarrow, hopefulyl finish up a few. Adding to the 4 finished ones above is Onyx the Guardian, Yanarril (probably a counts-as Varghar or The Watcher), 2 Predators of Blood, 2 Hunters, a Repentant, a Grave Guardian, and a Guardian of the Runes. It'll be nice ot have a fully painted wolfen force after all these years, I've had the metals since '04 or so and never got more than half of them done, and those weren't all that great by current standards.

Half done, just a quick break to snap some quick pics while waiting for some of the ink to dry. All of the basecoats are cleaned up and washed, bases are painted. They need highlights and static grass/tufts/leaves, but that's the fun part :)
