Small Shuttles (Or Escape Pods) For 15mm?
« on: 31 July 2012, 08:16:09 AM »
This is what happens when I find a stack of thin laminated gift cards, 54mm by 86mm in size, and a little time to kill.

More pics here:

So, what should I do with them next?

Thanks,

Dan

I decided to start with the wide-nosed body first.

OK.  Here we go . . .

QUESTIONS:

1) I stopped adding styrene after I got to this stage.  Give it to me straight.  How bad is it? Have I simply ruined the whole look?  In other words, has my attempt at putting on some panels failed, utterly and irreparably?  If so, no need to move on to the next question.

2) What would work best for filling in all those small spaces where the panels didn't quite fit?

Thanks guys,

Dan

I think the panelling looks good. To be honest I wasn't sold on the initial pics but now I can see what you were aiming for and I like the end result. You could probably get away with a little more panel detail or other bits and bobs. As for gap filling I'd suggest Milliput. That way you'll be able to sand it easily and get a slightly rounded edge in the process which would work well.

I like the panels a lot. If anything I'd say add more. You can never have enough panels. One thing you might consider is using different thicknesses of plasticard for different panels. For filling gaps I'd say whatever you use to fill gaps in miniatures. Another idea is to use really thin plastic rod along the seams in places. This will both hide gaps and add details. On more idea is to use super thin plasticard folded over the gaps.

Now for the real question, where did you find all those gift cards?

Already replied on TMP, where Dan was weeping like a little girl...  lol

Okay, that was a bit harsh, but for what seems a respectable start, he sounded like he was freaking.

The sides currently have NO detail; either some scribed lines, or greebling seems even more important than windshield I mentioned. However, a lot of that can be improved with a paint job.

I mentioned paper punch circles. Hope it was clear I meant punched styrene. Thin stuff punches perfectly fine. Well, good enough once you gone around the edges with fine sandpaper or the like.

Really, fun little designs; hope to see them entering battle soon.

LOL.  I know.  Mwaa, mwaa, mwaaaaa!

Actually, I think that the level of disappointment is in direct correlation with the level of excitement I had when I first glued the main hull pieces.

I haven't given up on this craft, I promise to come back to it.  But right now I'm going to try and start with something a little less elaborate (less angles).  Let me know what you think of this other little shuttle/escape pod:

In the 'next experiment' thread, Dan sez:

...a ton of canceled gas station gift cards a friend gave me a while back...

Honest, I'm sure we all understand; a good part of the Unholy Pit of the Lost I call a basement is projects that started so grand, and became hopeless messes. I tend to keep such stories to myself, weeping quietly into my beard unless, of  course, I'm trying to talk Sir Randall into giving it a go.

I think he's on to me; at least, he's been clearing HIS Unholy Pit of items I foisted on him.
