Advice on workbench lighting please.

Hi all,

I finally found some time to sit at the workbench this evening, turned the lamp on and the last of my old fashioned daylight bulbs blew up. Tis a sad day. I knew it was coming but procrastination won through and I've done bugger all about it.

So I could do with some advice on decent lighting for the workbench that utilises the new fangled energy bulbs and of course isn't too expensive.

Might not exactly what you're after but I use two cheap Ikea angle poise lamps with Osram cold white fluorescent bulbs in.

I picked up an illuminated magnifier from Lidl a while back. It has a set of white LED's and the colour balance seems pretty good really, and the magnifier is large and clear and works very well indeed. The fact that it was knocked down from £30 to a fiver just made it sweeter!

Before that I had two different "daylight" low energy fluorescents. One (the second, more expensive one) was adequate (though not as good as the LED or the halogen), the first one I got was frankly bloody awful. I think it must have been matched to daylight somewhere other than on planet earth.

Before that I had a cheap halogen lamp, which actually worked really, really well but I couldn't replace it when the internal transformer died.

The halogen lamp kicked out a LOT of heat, which reduced the open time of paint on the brush but was very handy for rapidly drying stuff.

I'm using a GE 13W Helical Compact florescent, It's bright and it doesn't give off a lot of heat.

Joroas, you're right, Hobbycraft have got oodles of them and its currently 25% off all lighting and accessories. With staff discount it's even more................

Personnaly I'm using 2 PHILLIPS GENIE Energy Saver. One on left (I'm left handed) of 18watt, and 11watt on right. It give me a nice overal white cold lightning. Perfect for painting, comfortable for modelling or reading rules, and nice for minis photos too.
