So, who's playing Where Heroes Dare?
« on: November 27, 2012, 02:59:09 AM »
I bought the rulebook a couple of years ago and it looks quite intriguing. 2013 is the year that a buddy and I will likely try out some Pulp gaming as a slight diversion from our Gothic Horror gaming (and 15mm Impetus, and Old West). I really love the shticks and the ability to personalize almost any archetype of the Pulp world. The Dare locations and campaign  system looks quite good as well.

One the flip side, I don't see a whole lot about the game here on LAF these days and I wonder is there a specific reason or are folks just into other systems. I'll take whatever advise you'll throw my way but, we are most interested in a warband vs. warband sort of game rather than a GM-run game.

Thanks - J

I've played a number and put them on my site

I like the system but I also lack local miniatures gamers.

I've run several games of Where Heroes Dare for my local group and we really like it. One game was several different factions looking for a hidden relic. Another was a game where the US Gunboat sailors were attempting to rescue a group of archaeologists from Chinese River pirates. Quite fun.

I bought the book, but must still play my first game. I like the rules: fast, rather simple and straight forward. Not a huge fan of unit-based pulp games, but there is a lot of freedom and options in the book. And the rules for big, pulpy robots are awesome :D

Jason, I unfortunately can’t tell you much about the game as I never played it but to your question about other games and reasons behind. Our game group, the very first guys on LAF (Driscoles, Grimm, Zoogla, Dominic, Green Knight, Poliorketes, Knoxville, Lurch and others) about 6-8 years ago, played intensively .45A games (see the Doc Thompson reports sticky on this board) just due to the narrative character, archetypes and all the interactive features like using of the things on the table, including the random civilians and so on. These were GM based games and that did work best for that bunch of loonies as some of them (me as well..) didn’t bother first to learn the rules and were happy about a GM telling how many dices to throw. I personally was absolutely excited about all that 45 Pulp adventure, the possibilities etc. and have been quite busy making tables, painting figures, dreaming scenarios and so on.

We also had one or two of Chaos in Cairo games and it was nice fun but at that time not quite the game we wanted to play. Too much distraction through the many dice throws and also not too much space for the interaction. We wanted our own “Indiana Jones” movie on the table and we have very much concentrated on the visual aspect of the game, painting and building. For some of us the rules were just kind of support for this vision, at least for me, I was happy about Grimm making GM and wanted to see the story running smoothly on the table,  I wasn’t bothered about winning the game or testing different options, the main factor was watching  our interactive “movie”. Perhaps not everyone from the gang had the same opinion, that’s just my personal point of view.

I really don’t know how much influence had our reports and all the talking about .45 on the LAF community.

I’m actually surprised you aren’t going  for Chaos in Cairo. For a warband vs. warband game this probably would be my first choice. Though how you said, you’re after creating of archetypes so this maybe would work better somewhere else.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to your Pulp games, this will be a great show again, I’m quite sure :)

I'm actually playing Dungeon Delves now in a group, so I don't think there's anymore room for a Gm-run game. That's why I am not considering 45 Adventure at the moment. I like the two-player games mostly because me and one of the guys in the group are getting this off the ground and we don't want to depend on a group in order to play.

The Where Heroes Dare character development section looks very cool to me. There is no shortage of ways to tailor each character. I'm not sure how the rules themselves will work out - the D10 rolls for combat seem rather lethal but it's hard to tell until one tries the game.

I've just emailed Wolf Girl and enquired about the Pulp Alley rules as well. They seem to allow customizable character creation and take advantage of game cards (which I love) and different types of dice (which seems fun).

Anyway, Tenz and I are going to order enough models to do a couple of Pulp groups each. We'll see what evolves.

It is rather lethal so heroes should always have human targets, I mean companions, to accompany them. ;)

Weird Science can be powerful but very dangerous to use (see my site about how one exploding robot took out another). I'd tone down that danger a little in some way or no one will bother to use it.

We run WHD without the sci-fi stuff as a Home Guard pulp setting. Last game Captain Willoughby and the Little Marskeham Home Guard chased down some Luftwaffe aircrew. The rules played out nicely and while bloody they weren't as bloody as Disposable Heroes. We had a blast with the Germans stealing a delivery van, farmers taking pot shots and dogs chasing Home Guard.
