Spad S.V II

Hi all:

In my visit to the Palm Springs Air Museum I also get a toy: this model from the Classic Planes series of NewRay. It costed me 10 $

Once assembled, it is almost perfectly scaled to 28 mm miniatures. Here it is with my Copplestone airman.

I bought this model (there were also the typical Red Fokker and a Sopwith Camel) because it looked less a war plane than an interwar-flying-circus-plane for me, so it is ideally suited for Pulp scenarios.

Nice buy. Can't quite make out the manufacturer? 8)

Sweet. Are you planning to use as is, or do a repaint?

It's made by Newray. I have a couple (this and a Sopwith camel) too.

I got one in the new year sales, think it's the Sopwith, but I thought it was a bit too large for 28mm when I had assembled it. It seems to stand very high off the ground (although I think the wheels are oversized anyway).

That said I know nowt about biplanes, so I may be wrong. Were they bigger than you'd think?  :?:

The model is a bit oversized for 28 mm, but I don't mind since normally it will be a piece of scenery for Pulp games.

Gotcha. I think it would be a better fit you could replace the wheels with a smaller set, but I don't know how you'd do that. And I'm lazy.

You're right though, for a bit of scenery it does look pretty good right out of the box, and if you aren't bothered by the size then what does it matter?

The wheels look to be in scale as far as I can see. I think smaller ones might look a bit odd.

The rest of the undercarriage does seem a little high though, by comparison with some box art from another kit of the same plane I'm looking at right now.

1/48 really is a little bit big for some 28mm figures (which of course themselves vary in size like crazy). With some planes it isn't noticeable, with others it is. You either have to live with it or find another scale.

Yeah, I'd still use it. I'd just feel dirty.
