Panzer IV painting help
« on: 23 December 2012, 04:18:15 PM »
Painting a Panzer IV and can't find a clear picture or guide about the circled part below (Don't even know what it's called)

Would this have rusted like the muffler?

Thanks

Come on people, I'm sure I'm not the only one here to have ever painted a Panzer!  :?

I have no idea, I haven't seen such a piece of kit on a Mark IV. I took this photo of one a few years ago...

...and it is absolutely no help at all.  lol

But whoever painted this random example from the internet has something vaguely similar painted this way:

Plynkes beet me to it - couldn't find anything on the net, and the pic of the model shown above is better than I managed. Will try to dig up my Osprey on the MkIV and see if that helps.

It l.ooks to be painted black here, but I think I'll just leave it as is. Wish I knew what it was!

And Osprey Vanguard 18 turned up nothing - sorry.
But it DOES look like a pressurised cylinder.

I remember trying to find this out when I built my PzIVs from PSC.  I didn't bookmark anything, so the only thing I could find on the web today was this:

http://www.lloydianaspects.co.uk/models/pzivh.html

If you look below the fifth picture, he has a description of the item that reads, "a strange construction which I have discovered was an air-filter system. The good news is that not all Ausf. Hs had this extra filter, so you can do without it. It was something designed for the deserts of North Africa."

Best I can do today, I'm afraid.

Thanks for that, i am just about to paint up 14 Panzer IV.
so that solves one of the problems.
i glued it in the same place as my FOW Panzer IV on the right side.

IIRC some models of the PzIV had a small two-stroke engine to operate the turret traverse. If yours is one of those it would be the exhaust for this. HTH.

Well, here's another discussion about that same part over on TMP:
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=231415
And here is one of the links in that discussion with some nice pictures of a large scale model:

I was in a bit of a hurry earlier, and didn't find these links until just now.

It's an air filter. Paint the cam scheme over it or leave it base yellow brown.
