« on: 26 March 2013, 01:00:13 PM »
Heavily updetailed S and S Models WMIK and Jackal. 4

Unusually from Shaun these are patterned at 1/56, which is most welcome.

I can post all the mods for those that are interested?

As always more pics on my flickr

These were an "interest" project for me, and I'm more than happy with the results, but they now need new homes, poa. (neil"at"troop-of-shewe.co.uk)

IMPRINT Stryker & HUMVEE coming through in April :o)

Lost this wip post somewhere on my blog, so reposted below.... But the main changes were:

A) 50 cal/gpmg mounts made out of odds and sods, I think a an old bolt action 50 cal. The figures are not fixed so you can move them around
B) stowage, the grey stuff is legend (iirc) expensive but nice, the other odds and sods were from the spares box and any modern kit from s and s models.
C) all the aerial mounts were scratched from plastic rod with copper wire wrapped around.
D) the stretcher was metal foil and plastic rod
E) the tow rope/harness on the jackal was again from metal foil
F) I wasn't happy with the representation of the camo net, on research this is commonly made from section of s shaped material, so I recovered with miliput and fashioned a die out an old pen assembly and basically just pushed it in randomly to get the imprint
G) three different types of camo painted here, crew, bergan covers and bergans are all different.
H) the wheel arches on the jackal were chiselled out in order to put the front wheels at an angle, much more dynamic.
I) metal foil was used around the wheel arches and light clusters
G) I'm sure there was more, but I found the tankograd book to be invaluable.
K) lastly crew were brooks miniatures from old glory uk.

I will add that the s and s basic kits are perfectly serviceable, I just like to play!

I had a good weekend doing the usual WW2 stuff, and with some down time I decided to clean up my workspaces. I found a little box with half started S&S models WMIK and Jackal, so i thought i'd play. The hulls were previously primed and based coated black alongside another commision.

At this stage nothing special really, the Jackal has had its front wheel arches deepened to permit the wheels to be on the turn. I frequently do this as it adds some dynamics and motion to the final piece. the crew, I think are Old Glory, not sure tbh, I prefered their bulk over the perfectly servicable S&S ones ( sorry Shaun....). The extra grey stowage is a 1/48th set from Legend (IIRC) I think strictly its american, but hey whatever....

The WMIK posed a larger problem due to the safety cage, S&S supply some struts that are again adequate but i decided to rebuild with cut wire and plastic rod, it will pass at a distance. I'm stumped now as i need another of the front gunners MG's so I'll bug Shaun.

I'd really like to add extra details to these, such as aerials and ICM masts, stowage etc so if you've got any input/pictures please shout. My modern book collection is not that large.

Some minor updates, spent time researching mainly, so many different UOR kits, fits and builds that some details are difficult to pin down, so i guess these wont be that specific, which means it'll be a rivet counters paradise...

On the Jackal, have added two fire extinguishers in the cab, smoke dischargers, the front gpmg ( thanks shaun), side net stowage with helmet and the fiddly bits of rubber trim around the wheel arches.

The WMIK, has had some armour plates added around the door spaces, an S&S webbing set on the frame and a fiddly bonnet stowage frame added.

I've been looking into camo nets, and still trying to work out how to do them effectively, more semicircular plastic "S" shapes which is different to the easier WW2 stuff to do, still thinking on that....

Hope that helps, to be fair the originals are ideal for gaming, the more I add the fiddly they become, so it's always a trade off. Any questions please ask either here or

I will be starting an Imprint  Stryker build  after Salute ( commission so i wont be flogging my wares) so will post up here if people are happy.

Many thanks for the additional wip pics and info, great detailing work on them both. Any tips regarding the paint job?

Hmmm, painting moderns is always tricky as the stable weathering "tricks" just don't occur in reality. I faded the panel centres to give some colour contrast, I think I used tamiya desert yellow as the base coat over a chocolate/ hull red undercoat. Weathering is limited to very minor scratch regime with successive dust layers built up and taken off, primarily with humbrol enamels and white spirit.  I know pigments have become the default "fix all" recently, but they only really come into their own on top of other techniques, i,ve seen more examples of poorly used pigments than their effective use, me included. In fact I'm not sure I used any on these to be honest.
