Nederlanders! HELPEN!
« on: 08 May 2013, 03:06:00 PM »
Hoi!

This is mostly for my Dutch mates, but it's fair game for anyone in Europe.

I'm looking for 30x30cmx4mm  (or so) MDF board/tiles.  I cant seem to find them anywhere!

Aso, break cleaner fluid, or the equivalent to take the paint off matchbox cars...

Thanks in advance!

Most DIY stores (bouwmarkten) have the possibility to saw the materials to the measurements you require. I know for sure "Multimate" and "Fixit" can do this for you. You just have to check if they have 4mm MDF (some of them don't and the thinnest is 6mm).

Brake fluid can be had al Halfords or car parts suppliers. I don't use it anymore cause it is very carcenogenic. These days I use Mr Muscle ovencleaner sprayed into a plastic bag, dunk the model in it and wait 24 hours. Seems to take most if not all of the paint off. When it really won't come off get paintstripper from your evrage home depot store.

I had 30x30cm plates of 4mm msg cut once. Turned out they were off on one side by 3mm an that ruined them. Expensive joke. Only used cloth after that, much easier to work with and store.

I usually get my MDF at Gamma, Hornbach or Praxis. most carry standard sizes of 122x60 cm in a variety of thicknesses.

I had one of those (3mm btw) cut into 4 pieces of 30x60cm at Praxis when I bought it, and the cuts were spot on in my case. the left-over strip at the end was about 1cm wide, so the loss from 4 cuts was considerable. Had I had them cut the board lengthwise, I'm sure the parts would not have been 30 cm tall...

It also depends heavily on who does the cutting; some are better (and know their machines better) than others and I suppose this varies even within the same store.

If exact dimensions are really important to you, you could either do it yourself (but you'd need to invest in the right equipment), or maybe use one of those lasercutting services that seem to be sprouting up everywhere. I've been eying this one to use for a terrain project I'm planning: https://www.snijlab.nl/nl

Relatively expensive, but if it's precision you seek, that's a sure way to get it.
