Talisman: just starting
« on: April 14, 2013, 03:17:08 PM »
I just got Talisman 4E this week, and playing with grey, unpainted figures is of course out of the question. So I started with the toads, and the magician. It's been ages since I've painted anything larger than 15mm, so this was a bit weird to paint, but I'm ok with the results.

Pics taken with my phone, so not the best quality.

Very nice  :) :)
I'm curious - and ignorant - what relation does this bear to the GW edition of Talisman, which is obviously very similar? And which had no model toads, just counters  :(

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. I have the German edition, published by Fantasy Flight Games / Heidelberger Spieleverlag. As it was only 35,- EUR (for 14 character figures + 4 toads... plus the game itself), I guess the game was worth the price even if I get to play only rarely :)

Having painted the Talisman set for a friend, I realize just how difficult it is to make them look good; you've succeeded in this WONDERFULLY. GREAT WORK!

OK, I did some more work today. After painting these, I have to admit that while it's nice to have minis in the first place, the casting quality is, well, rather basic. Most of my 15mm is more detailed, and made better, than these dudes. The minstrel in particular was a pain.

Anyway, they still look better with paint on them, I guess.

Hello zorg, all the minis look good but I especially like the blue you used on the druid.

Keep 'em coming,

Got a few more done, only the Elf is still waiting.

It sounds lame, but these guys look better in person. :) Except the thief, who's really that ugly, but that's a misshapen model if I ever saw one... And I need to correct the painting error on the conehead ghoul.

It requires a certain painting skill to make bad(ly cast) miniatues look good. So far you did a good job, I like especially the toads. How do they look on the board?
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Thank you! I think the problems of these minis only really become clear when you paint them, less so when you play a game with them. Most of my gaming buddies aren't into miniatures anyway, soi likely they didn't notice the casting quality...

We only had one game so far, which I enjoyed immensely. Two of the characters were painted, the others were basecoated. I think it added to the fun! :) No one got toaded, though.

I do like those toads. You've done a great job of painting them with a variety of skin markings and eye colours.

The most recent GW-released Talisman game was 4th edition. It was published in 2007 by Black Industries. In 2008 Fantasy Flight published the revised 4th edition (ie 4.5th). It's more or less identical apart from the addition of Fate tokens, a bigger game board and miniatures instead of cardboard tokens.

Good job getting them all painted, Zorg! Finish off that elf now. =)

And, at last, the Elf. I'm glad to be done with this batch.

Hi. Citadel actually had an entire line of metal miniatures to go with the original games. They can be seen here:

To the OP, nice looking batch of minis. I collect the originals. This is the first chance I have had to see the new ones.
