Trying to sci-fi an orc
« on: 23 September 2013, 09:32:21 PM »
Hello there,

I'm trying to convert some of the 200 orc plastic bowmen that I've got into something useful. Hopefully a force for No Limits.

Sort sci-fi Indians.

But I can't really figure out if its shit or OK.

Obviously I gave it a new nose and some hair,... and then the thing he's wielding's supposed to be an electro bow.

I like the concept, sculpting and paintjob, but the bow looks more like a shake-weight to me...  ;) I take it you were going for a bowcaster look?
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Have you got any spare 40k Ork arms? I only ask because whilst the arms are already attached they are pretty easy to remove on these as the jerkin provides a nice cutting point. Remove arms, smooth area down and replace with new sci-fi ones. Cut the fletches off the quiver and make it look like a pouch or something.

The other alternative is to just replace the hands. The bow holding one with a pistol and the other with a hand weapon or another pistol.

Those would be my suggestions if you have the parts . . . .

Keep the bow, but attach "assorted bits" to make it a tad more high-tech?

From some video game, I think, but you get the idea.

With those particular miniatures, I think you have set yourself a very difficult task to add a sci-fi theme to them.

The balls on the bow don't look that convincing... but I can't for the life of me think of anything to help improve things...

It doesn't help that the Orks are feral in the first place and lack armour that could be sci-fi'd up.

High tech bows and maybe some night vision goggles/headsets, extra equipment pouches with a more modern look to them... that's the best I can come up with :( .

It's a difficult one...

Try using Dark Elf bows rather than Orc or orb bows. The Dark Elf blades and bows look much more High Tech.

Other than that the Mini looks good and I would like to see more.

I'm another one who likes the changes to the figure, but not the bow.  It looks like some sort of weightlifting equipment, like a dumbell or something.  Not very identifiable as a weapon, IMO.

If you want an easy path to sci-fi them up, but keeping a semi-primative feel, use 40K Ork weapons, but convert them to spear guns and cross bows.

For cross bows, take some of the bow ends from the WFB Orcs and attach them to 40K Ork guns making high tech cross bows.

For spear guns, cut the magazines off the 40K Ork weapons and drill a hole in the barrel to insert a plastic spear.  For the larger 40K Ork guns, use WFB Orc spears.  For the pistols, use human, elf, or goblin spears.  You can either assume they are all spring loaded, or fashion some gas canisters and attach them where the magazine was cut off.

The Orc you have pictured could be reaching for another spear.  Just fashion him a large "quiver" on his back with a spear or two in it.
All my best ideas are someone elses

Hmm. Now I'm starting to like it. I might have to do a unit of 10 of these (The weapon needs to be painted in fluorescent green though I see that now,).

Maybe a crossbow/slingslot instead?

since it it is plastic it should be simple to rotate the hands at the wrist and the right arm at the shoulder/jerkin joint - that might add a different perspective to it. Problem is, GW orcs have a anatomical handicap with their necks, they are probably stabbed from behind by the dozen
I always find bowmen difficult to convert to anything other then archers  ;)
