Tropical Vines and Climbers
« on: 18 January 2014, 08:24:43 PM »
Hi,
Another tutorial for Timmy's website. This one uses plastic plants welded to electrical cable with a glue gun.

One thing I could use a reminder on - how do I put a photo in the post? I've attached a pic, but not sure how it will look when I post.

Very smart! I can see this making wonderful, authentic ivy, if I could find the right sized leaves. Thanks for sharing!
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Thanks.
For Ivy, Birch seed covers make fantastic leaves. They are part of birch catkins. If you can't find them yourself, some terrain places sell packs of them.  The way to use them is a different method, which is to use cotton soaked in PVA for the stema and then attach the leaves, one at a time, with PVA.

I've done it here on a ruin.

That ivy looks superb but must have taken ages to do. How do you colour your birch seeds?
So many projects..... so little time.......

I tried to dye them with paint before but it wasn't that successful, so I ended up painting them. You can buy some ready coloured, but I don't know if the colour is as deep as that.

I painted them. It does take a while, but as long as you don't do too big an area it isn't too bad. You start seeing teh effect pretty quickly, so that kind of keeps you going.

I think that if I decide to do much more of that, I'd probably buy a pack from somewhere. 4D modelshop in London do it at £6.65 for a 1.8 g pack. Sounds very expensive, but they are incredibly light so 1.8g gets you a fair number. I'd probably want to see a pack before buying though to see how much you get.

DCC Supplies are cheaper, but only seem to do the brown ones.

Antenocitis Workshop might do them.

I've got a slew of birch trees I put in my garden, to bolster the flora in the face of the threat from Chalara fraxinea. I'll start collecting seeds!
