Adventurer versus Soldier looking figures

Over on TMP http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=335343 Golan2072 asked about best 15 mm figures for Traveller Solomani but it was the picture there that caught my attention.

The male figure looks suitably military/paramilitary/Scout Service in appearance as does the female until... the hair.  The hair was where it jarred and undid everything else in appearance.

Okay, I am old school USAF military (7 years, 3 months, 12 days,) in formed opinions/prejudices but the long hair in operational status just set me askew for a second.  Off duty, fine, lots of my female medic/RN friends (yes, in the 1970s hospital environment we "fraternized" a lot to the consternation of the non-medical types of the day,) had long hair but it was kept up/out of the way on duty.  All that USAF Uniform Regulation 35-10  crap.  

But seriously, I don't know (enlighten me) if anybody's military lets female troops run around with long locks flowing freely in operations (great way to get scalped around heavy equipment or at least tangled up in those stupid projecting parts that equipment (especially military equipment) seems to have festooned freely.)  

So... here is my thought/question:

I think flowing hair looks a bit wrong, but a shortish bob cut can emphasise that a figure is female; a sort of exaggeration that works on a miniature though it is, strictly speaking, wrong.
