Bendy plastic looses matt effect?
« on: 24 March 2014, 08:01:35 AM »
Hi,

I have painted several types of bendy plastic miniatures (Mansions of Madness, Zombicide), by following the following procedure:

1) Clean the miniature
2) Prime them with Citadel Skull White
3) Paint them
4) Gloss varnish them with cheap gloss car varnish
5) Dullcoat them with Daler Rowney Clear Soluble Matt Varnish

I do step 4 & 5 also for my metal, normal plastic and resin miniatures and this always works perfectly.
But with the bendy plastic after a while the models go glossy again, as if the matt varnish disappears over time. Superweird.

Does anybody have similar experiences? And any tips on how to prevent this from happening?
Thanks!

Oh, and here's the pictures :P

Regretfully this happens always. I tried different methods of priming, painting and varnishing, but it´s always the same: After a year or so all is glossy and often sticky too. I suppose the softener agent is diffunding through the layers of primer, paint and varnish and reacts with the varnish by softening it too. Matt varnish is usually talcum powder in a liquid medium. If that formerly dried and hardened medium becomes softened again, I could imagine it being rather glossy than actually liquid. This would explain a certain stickyness too.  >:(

I had the same problem with a plasic hippo and alligator  :'(

I have some plastic dino's to paint and a friend of mine who is using nothing but 'bendy' plastics these days recommends spraying the plastic figures / animals with Aleene's Tacky Glue which does dry and then a coating of Krylon Fusion for Plastic.

I cannot guarantee that the plastic will not go glossy over a long term but I have seen his plastic Naps that are about 3 years old now and they are still matt.

I've repainted a lot of clix over the years and never had a problem with them going sticky. Are you guys stripping the factory paintjobs?
