Dux Britanniarum and vikings?
« on: 15 April 2014, 08:05:20 PM »
I am interested in picking up DuxBrit as an alternative system to Saga, the campaign system in particular sounds very appealing. There's an introductory video on youtube which explains some background and campaign stuff, but I was unable to find part 2 which promised some gameplay action. No problem, there are plenty of reviews and snippets around to convince me that I want it.

However, my two main forces that I want to use are Saxons and Vikings, roughly 200 or 300 years ahead of the Romano-Brits and Saxons of the ruleset. Is this a big problem? Are the rules generic enough to allow me to use vikings, I realise that the background and campaign system will be pretty specific but am hoping that it's possible to tweak it and "jump" it forward a couple of centuries? Or should I look to the new book, which I understood to be raiders from the north of the British Isles, not raiders from across the North Sea as the vikings were?

In a nutshell, can I use DuxBrit with my Saxons as the incumbent rulers, the vikings as the raiders from overseas?

Yes and no.

Yes, it would work - the campaign system could work pretty much the same way.

Also, a strong element of the "colour" of Dux Brit is the career path for nobles AND the Fate cards that describe the tactics of the forces. If you're happy design your own properties for the armies (the Anglo-Saxons of the Viking attacks period are quite different to the attackers/"invaders" of the 5th/6th century) and to make your decks, then go ahead.

Out of the box, as it were, then I'd say no. It's not a "tweak" job - there would be too much to do.
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

The magazine summer special mentioned above has exactly what you want. It's basically a Dux game variant for Vikings including berserkers some new scenarios etc. It's really all you need and exactly what you're looking for. We played a few times and I think it works well.

Sounds good. So can you advise me on buying the original DuxB set, given my desire to use vikings. Will I need to buy the original cards, or does the xmas special have variants/replacements? Not much point in paying for the original card set if I never use it!

Some mates and I ran a Dux game last year for a Viking exhibition at the Museum in Edinburgh. Vikings raiding Scots great fun.

You will need the main rules, the special and the cards.
The Xmas special says for the Vikings to use the Saxon cards, Saxons and Welsh use the British cards. Rules for ship fighting and 3 scenarios.
