First games of Doctor Who
« on: 12 May 2014, 01:52:10 PM »
With some Doctor Who miniatures finally painted we finally got a couple of games in on Saturday and there is no other way to describe the day as "Excellent".  As the miniature selection is limited at the moment (to say the least) I had to be creative with the games we played so I came up with a scenario we could play with what was available.

The background was that a Dalek civil war was reaching its zenith dragging countless worlds into the conflict, whether they wanted to or not, when Earth Intelligence received information that Davros had been sighted on one such world, undoubtedly there to conduct illegal experiments on the local populace.  However they key piece of information was that he was only escorted by a few Dalek troopers, clearly his arrogance was getting the better of him.  A crack team was sent in to capture the evil genius so that he could be used against his own creations and bring an end to the war.  The operation was successful however not without cost, their transportation was damaged and personnel losses were high, Davros was placed in cryo suspension and a call sent out for extraction.  The call however was intercepted and soon Dalek forces from both sides were on route, the extraction was no longer a simple prospect.
Here's where the game begins, a third of the Earth forces were set up in the board quarter with the facility with Davros being held in one of the buildings (the location of which was hidden from the other players), the forces of the Imperial and Renegade Daleks then set up in randomly selected corners.  The Earth player would receive the remainder of their forces in the end phase of turn two on a roll of 4+ or if this failed in the end phase of turn three.  The aim of the game was simple, the Earth forces had to hold Davros against the Dalek forces and the Dalek players had to capture Davros.
The game was brilliant, I ended up with the Renegade Daleks who proved entirely ineffective as I was afflicted as usual by my terrible dice rolling, I had three entire turns where they didn't hit a single thing and the Imperials Special Weapon Dalek was the bane of my existence.  The Earth forces suffered early losses to the Imperial Daleks but were managing to just about hold the facility while their extraction team/reinforcements where doing a good job of holding back my Renegades.  In the end my Renegades were literally wiped out through horrendous crossfire, the Earth forces eventually buckled under mounting losses leaving the Imperial Daleks victorious.
Here are some pictures from the game:

The Table

Renegades concentrate fire but only cause one hit on the SW Dalek

Imperial Daleks advance on the Earth defences

Earth reinforcements arrive and advance

A great moment from the game, after surviving my initial volley the SW Dalek single handedly held me back and began to whittle my force away however when it was looking the most grim I played my ace in the hole

As the Imperial Daleks had priority I was now free to unleash my full force against this thorn in my side, until this...

This is when my luck ran out and I proceeded to hit nothing which culminated in the Supreme being annihilated and I dropped out of the game

With the Renegades gone the Imperials could focus on the Earth forces who ended up fleeing in the face of a superior force

As the game went so well we decided to have another and continue on with the story.  So the Imperial Daleks now held the facility, the Emperor had been transported away however Davros was now working with them while the Renegades and Earth forces stayed the same and again entered from a random corner.  The objective this time was simple, both the Earth and Renegade Daleks couldn't afford having Davros working with the Imperials so he was to be eliminated.  A couple of us swapped sides to give something else a go while Amy (my darling other half and victor of the first game) continued with the Imperials so I took the Earth forces this time with my cousin (and regular adversary) took the Renegades.
My luck seemed to have changed considerably and I did exceptionally well, both holding back the Renegades and storming the Imperial facility and killing Davros.  A large part of this was down to the terrible luck Amy had with the dice rolls and my incredible luck however the Renegades were nipping at the Earth forces heels by the end and I wouldn't have survived another turn had I not managed to take Davros down, it was a real all or nothing mission.
Here are some photo highlights:

Earth and Renegade forces advance on the Imperial Dalek position

Earth forces take fire from both Dalek factions as they continue to advance

The 'man of the match', this lucky individual managed to make four body armour saves of 6+ in a row (though they eventually fell to over whelming fire)

Earth forces head to Davros' bunker blasting at Daleks as they go while the Renegades advance to their rear

Davros' inventing gets under way

But its too little too late and Davros finally meets his end... or does he?

Another great game which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, so much so we then spent the night watching the three "... of the Doctor" episodes from the anniversary.  Now I have to get cracking with painting up some different forces so that we can try out something new next time, Cybermen!

Cheers Quendil, the Earth troopers are from Sedition Wars (Studio McVey) and the scenery is a mixture of Mantic mats, GW and GF9 buildings and the River and Bunkers were picked up at a wargames show some time ago, alas the company which produced them ended the range.

Thanks, Giger!

It appears my google-fu has not failed me altogether. I'd found that site before seeing your reply, but pleased to have confirmation.  :D

Will definitely give those a look.

While a fan and devoted watcher, I've never felt a strong desire to tabletop the good Gallifreyan. However, a friend's wife might just be tempted in to joining in for a change.  ;)

Where did you get the Gallifreyan dice?

If you track them down, will you consider going in together on an 'order'? I don't FB.
