New Republic French force tanks
« on: 30 June 2014, 11:17:33 PM »
To add more heavy support to my New Republic French sci fi force, Converted up these tanks to be more sci fi looking. Started with kitech 1 48 scale kits then add plasticard to detail out. Added armored side skirts. Change guns, add missile launchers.

Like doing the kind of scratch building only thing I hate with tanks is the treads and wheels. If can find a cheap base to start will change everything else.

Group shoot

Transport – changed the turret and sides

Medium tank – add missile launchers to the side of turret

Heavy tank – add new barrel and missile launcher to top.

Anti-air tank – built the entire turret to use the Gatling gun part.

Work in progress shots

Nice tanks.  :)

I don't know the game they are for, but yes I recognize something French in them...

...is it a vague "Leclerc" shape, or the colour?  ;) :)

Lookin' good.  The only one I don't like too much is the gatling gun.  It's impossibly huge.  Charming but it's a bit much.  lol  The others look spot on for a future-tech tank.  Nicely done!

Nice work on the conversions. I think the AAA works once you think that light composite materials would be used.

I love the triangular gun barrels! But yeah I have to concur the Gatling is a little large, great job though!

This is just a personal beef of mine with almost all gatling-related weapons.  It's a niche style weapon which is based on an old design.  It's only used because of the need to fire rapidly without warping barrels.  It tends to lead to absurd rates of fire, in the 3000-5000 rounds per minute range.  Meaning you need a tremendous supply of ammunition.  I see waaaay too many silly sci-fi mecha/tanks with gatling guns and a small pod of ammunition.  Meaning the weapon would allow for perhaps 4-10 seconds of fire time before exhausted.

It seems to me every designer in the fictional world watched Predator a few too many times and thinks this is a generally good idea for a fighting vehicle.  lol  When I see a mecha/tank with a minigun I expect to see a HUGE belt of ammunition feeding into the thing.  It's just one weird bugaboo of mine.

How do you know it's firing shells? Perhaps it's a terrible X-rays-Gatling firing terrible killing X-rays, and the energy for them comes from the sky through the black antenna on the turret. A marvel of future French technology.  :D

Have to agree a little, that the gun might be too big for the chassis. When I was building it tried to shrink it a little, Also why had to build the entire turret. But I like the design. And the gun is extra model parts can buy cheap.

But who said it is firing slugs. Even if it where the A-10 main gun ammo drum is not that big in size compared to the other weapons in the category. But could be an energy weapon .

But it is sci fi and physics does not always work correctly  . Think of this tanks job that takes out high flying aircraft or satellites.

Kitech Marder and Leopard II? Bless 'em, they're awful kits, but dirt cheap.

You've done a fantastic job with them - great stuff!

Did you keep the motors in though?  :D
