This thread got me thinking about some kitchy statues that I bought a while back to make a temple... got 'em out yesterday, cracked off a couple of limbs and ears, and am ready to get painting. I bought them at a shopping mall store with a name like "Oriental Heaven" or something like that. You can find the same sorts of things at places like World Market, etc. I think they were six or seven bucks apiece, resin.

I think that, when looking for little statues, you should think about whether or not they look as though they're copies of larger statues. The monkey pole doesn't really look like something a primitive civilization would make; as it was mentioned, it's too naturalistic. The solo monkeys are closer, as they have a more angular design.
I'm going to painting mine gray, and cover them with roots and vines... here's a rough sketch of my plan for the final temple:

I'm not sure if I'm going to make the vines with sculpy and then cook them, or if I'll use hot glue and then paint them. Same for the vines coming off of the trees; I thought that I'd get some thin wire and then use caulk on it for texture, and paint that.
