Great idea, but have thought about using a PET bottle Blank?

There are the blanks before the PET bottle is both heated and blown into a plastic bottle mould. You can get them on Amazon.

Good toot.  I have been on the fence for a while about dips but I am going to give it a go.

Pretty nifty idea must give it a try - just thinking what I can dip them into here in UK.

I just found out polyurethane is getting hard to find over here (apparently it causes leprosy, ethnic cleansing, tonsillitis and global warming according to someone in the state of California so we do not want that).  I am going to give a try with some of the water based replacement I found at B&Q.  I will post here letting folks know how it works once I get some models done.

That's a great idea! I've been using floor varnish as well, but brushed on as I don't really have a good space for shaking excess off etc. That bottle might actually also be useful for collecting some of the excess varnish again for reuse as well as you're probably going to use 3-4x more varnish than there will be on the mini in the end.

Need to give it a try someday. Though I first have to make sure the missus is away as I doubt she will find the idea as great as I do The problems of not having a room completely for yourself...

Just a quick update on dipping here in the UK.  I tried a Homebase brand varnish (antique pine).  It is a water based option since polyurethane is not readily available.  I can tell you it did work as advertised.  I did not try to use my dremal since dragging out the power converter was not an option (110 v in a 220 country).  I was initially a bit leery since the liquid was completely opaque but I brushed it on in a thin layer and it worked a treat.  I will be switching to a darker shade varnish but for a test it worked great.  Thank you Denizen Kane for your toot which was the final straw that pushed me off the fence on this technique.
