Would this be Age of the Big Battalions or Gothic Horror?

Just watched the first episode, I thought it was excellent, great cast, very atmospheric, having read the book I know I will enjoy the story.

I could not get on with the book and never finished it. I have, however really enjoyed the first episode and look forward to seeing more.
