Vikingship
« on: April 25, 2015, 12:04:46 PM »
Picked up this beauty in a souvenirs shop in Stockholm last week. I like it a lot, only problem are the holes for the candles;  how could I fill them best? Any ideas?

The painted guy is gonna be the captain of the ship. His name is Tristifer Botley.

the easiest way would be styrodur (sorry found no translation of that probably just German PR-word from BASF) it usually is used as package or damming material. Next best thing might be cork, though I think it is a waste of that latter material. Also easy to cut is balsa, coming in various shapes. If all is not available use a few layers of cartonage. The advantage of all is, that they are glueable with ... well ... wood-glue, so there is time to adjust and re-do things.

If the proper hight is reached glue some wooden planks on it (test before glueing, so additional hight, length and width will fit), then paint.

That is what I'd do. ;)

And, You are right. A beauty!

best wishes

Hmm! What about packing it with insulation foam disks and sculpting the wood grain on. Or apply a very thin sheet of wood about 1mm thick for the whole deck and scribe the wood grain on with a metal brush that is used for brushing suede. Hope that helps. Awesome looking longship.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass....and I'm all out of bubblegum. No wait I've just found another pack in my back pocket. Mmm tropical fruit bubblicious.

I'm not sure if I'd just put a plain deck over it cover the whole ... ahm ... hole  o_o
I would still fill it, cause the holes will be a weakness, and sooner later something will stick through, tricky to repair, then.

  LMAO

You could do a mini diorama for each hole. Figs, booty etc but removable

Just looking in the background of your picture you pretty much have all you'd need to fill the holes.the corrugated cardboard can be used to fill the hole each layer at 90 degrees to the layer below?use the candle as a template. Then use thin card for planking( cereal packet card will do). It'll last far better than you'd think.I've made these out of card for a display game.there were picked up no end by countless people and are still going strong.
Mark.

Since there seem to be elevated sections of the deck planking towards the ends of the ship, it wouldn't look too out of place to just re-do the middle section planking. I think popsicle sticks (the wooden ones with the rounded ends, sometimes used for building old west buildings). would make a fine material and are cheap... Or thin balsa wood. They already have a wood grain texture but should be soft enough to score if more definition is needed. Now get out and eat about 20 popsicles! :D

Wooden coffee stirrers. You can buy them in sets of 1000 and they allready come in the right size for miniature wooden boards. ...And if you collect the round ends in a seperate box you'll someday have enough of those to do some impressive roof tiling on a late medieval house...

If you need something wider, then go to a local pharmacy and buy a pack of those things doctors use to keep a patient's tongue down while they check his or her pharynx.

I'd fill the holes upto the bottom of the deck planking, then put planks, made from styrene strip, on top.

I knew one shop had one without the holes and I could not remember where it was!
