The village of Grimpenhof is frightened and distraught. Young Elsa Ehrlichkeit, the prettiest girl in town and everyone's favorite hostess at Thursday Bangers & Beer Nights at the Red Griffin Inn, has gone missing, and foul play is greatly feared. The town sits in the shadow of sinister Grimpenstein Castle, and there have been dark rumors circulating about Count Orlog von Grimpenstein for many years -- over 150 years, in fact. More than a few previous unexplained deaths and disappearances have occured during that time, and the count's reclusiveness, his nocturnal lifestyle, and his penchant for undead retainers (inexpensive, but unsightly), are all adding to the mounting suspicions about him. Moreover, the Grimpenstein family history is not exactly sterling -- the castle's bronze portcullis and heavy gatehouse doors were removed by royal command long ago, after one of the count's ancestors openly defied the king, and few of his descendants have shown much interest in improving relations with their sovereign since that time. Nonetheless, some real evidence is required before any direct action against the count can be sanctioned, as the kingdom has very strict elder protection laws. But above all, Elsa must be found, hopefully before any real harm can come to her.
The king, though hard-pressed by the Shadow Deep menace, has dispatched a ranger band to investigate the matter. They have just arrived in town, and are preparing to search the area for clues. Some of the castle retainers are also up and about, however, and are making it clear that the Count does not welcome interlopers nosing around in his fiefdom...
