pulp alley, how many minis do I need

I have decided to slim down my collection and wondered how many minis I should hold on to in order to play with these rules?

WHAT?  this is the first i've heard of anyone saying they wanted to have fewer minis; significant other's wishes notwithstanding.  nevertheless, if you still want to puruse reduction, i'd say you'd need about 4 or 5 figures per side/league; although you could get away with with just 2 if you use the 'dou' perk.

I'd keep six figures for a league, but then games a more interesting if you have an array of extras and non-combatants too.

Some missile weapon types, a few obvious brawlers and mêlée specialists and the ever popular 'problem solvers' at the very least. Our leagues are typically five figures, but special events and growth of the league can see the roster grow to six or seven.

I'd figure you only need to keep a few dozen (3 to 5?) to have some good flexibility. A choice collection of characterful minis to represent groups from all sorts of backgrounds, periods and potentials.

Oh, and don't forget some cool animal figures and fantastic pulpy monsters. Cars, too, and aeroplanes...

Yeah, if you had one league and one league only, perhaps to play with friends who have leagues of their own (maybe you know a women's baseball team?  ;) lol ), then you'd want at least 4-7 characters for your usual league and then maybe a few more as hangers-on or occasional additions.

However, if you're running the games and are expected to provide plot points and scenery and such, then you'd probably want a good number more as bystanders, plot points and such. From a handful to a couple dozen.

My two cents.  Two 6 figure Leagues, a couple gangs of thugs, henchmen etc., and some bystanders.  Maybe 30 figures altogether. Happily, Pulp Figures come in pack of 5.

Well, since Nick used up the 'two cents', I'll have to settle for 'for what it's worth'...

The appeal of the genre (one of them, anyway...) is that it highlights the fun and adventure of the old serials.
Take a little time to google a few: the sets/props/characters/costumes are -by today's standards- laughable.  BUT...

That is, imo, a facet of the genre that needs to be played up, not hidden.

What this means for the 'How many do I need?' question is that the answer is 'Whatever you find lying about'.

My (less than humble opinion, of course) is that players around a table in a Pulp Alley game should be more than prepared (if not expecting) more than the usual share of 'What the &%$# is that?' when confronted with things during the course of play.

So, as others smarter than myself have pointed out: Have enough figs for a league (or two or three, if providing the entire game).  Beyond that, thrift/junk stores (in the US, at least...I assume there are equivalents?) can supply an ever-changing roster of bits and bobs and creatures and thingies to keep people guessing as to what may show up next time.

Adding to that being said, I'll say that most of our leagues go from 3 to 7 minis each.

Of course, with the complementary books you can have smaller or bigger leagues, but 3 to 7 seems to be a "balanced" option.

maybe time for a new dwelling. a home lone might be easier than getting rid of minis.  "never mind the kitchen - how big is the garage?"
