How to start the War of Spanish Succession
« on: 21 January 2016, 06:56:42 PM »
Having got hold of Beneath the Lily Banners, I'm pondering the WSS as another new theme for this year, just wondered whether anyone could suggest a good starting point by way of info? The usual searching on the 'net of course, but there's nothing like a good book  :D

In particular I'm looking at the Iberian peninsular. Don't ask me why, it must have to do with Khurusan's Spanish and Eureka's Catalonians (speaking of which, anyone know how they match up?)

Any pointers at all much appreciated

Thanks!

Rob

Marlboroughs Other Army. The British Army and the Campaigns of the First Peninsula War, 1702-12 by Nick Dorrell is a cracking book on the peninsula campaign.

It's a very good choice, actually. Many wargamers seem to worship on the Duke of Marlborough's altar and consider that all WSS battles outside of Bleinheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet were essentially sideshows. The Spanish theater is a road less travelled but it has plenty to offer nevertheless : interesting battles, a nice choice of armies and colourful uniforms.

In English, J.A.C Hugill's No Peace Without Spain is another commendable read.

We have a page on Almansa, the most well known Peninsula battle - http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C18/almanza.htm

There is also this on the 1710 campaign - https://www.caliverbooks.com/bookview.php?a00e2fce15a5a8df95f606c9c8174ed8&id=23279&subcatcode=D&subcatno=27. This is a detailed look at the 1710 campaign and the 5 battles/actions in it. http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C18/MarlSpain.htm

Finally the Catalonians have some stuff of the end of the war in Spanish when the Catalonians fought on - see here http://www.wargames.cat/Dwnload/index.htm

Thanks all - those books look good, and somehow managed to point me towards a book on the expedition to Portugal in 1662-'68 I might also "have" to acquire...  :D

This is completely unhelpful but I just can't resist:

Grow really old, have no heirs, and run a vast and complex empire surrounded by jealous rivals!

 lol

I crack myself up.  :o

Thanks for this information. I've been slowly gathering troops for this period.  I think I will look more closely at this.
