First game with Ulterior Motives
« on: July 14, 2017, 12:26:23 PM »
Cracking game last night in which an Illusionist Band clashed with a Gnoll Elementalist in Genie in a Bottle, with Ulterior Motives cards.

Even more mayhem and fun than a normal game.

I (Balthazar the Magnificient - Illusionist) got Wraith Run so was being pursued by a couple of Wraith Knights (Eeek! my starting band was not equipped for this!) To make matters worse I retrieved a treasure in the first turn thanks to Telekinesis and a speedy thief (Arrow Tooth Tony) only to reveal the Genie! (Again a bit powerful for me)

The Gnolls weren't being idle either after dispatching a couple of Wild dogs that thought their small construct was a chew toy, the Gnoll Javelineer skewered my Apprentice. Things were looking tough for me.

The Genie finally broke free (slaughtered) my minions trying to block it and headed for the Gnolls, their Apprentice was ready and with a might effort he opened a Planar Tear and sent the Genie back to the Netherworld.

Some cunning Teleporting and running like crazy from me meant that the Wraith Knights engaged the Gnoll warband, shrewd use of Elemental Hammer dispatched them both but at a cost. It had allowed my Captain, Ragnar Swiftfoot accompanied by his trusty warhound Rex and a thief named Swag, to intercept a Gnoll Thug with some treasure. After a bit of a struggle Ragnar made off with the treasure.

Meanwhile that cunning Teleporting had left Baltahazar isolated on the top of some high ruins with a treasure and a Gnoll Infantryman, a some what comical scene was played out with the Wizard attempt to us Push to fling the Gnoll off their precarious perch, twice he cast the spell and twice the Gnoll remained unmoved! So in the end a lucky bit of swordplay saw the Gnoll pushed back off the edge and fall to his doom.

This left the Gnoll Wizard and the remains of his warband gathering round the mysterious runic disc, which turned out to be a Transporter and the object of their quest.

Great fun as ever with highs and lows on both sides, I got more treasure but the Gnolls got more experience, so I think it was a draw?

Looking forward to another go using Ulterior Motives, definitely gives the warbands something extra to think about.

Nice report!
Looking forward to getting a chance next month to try U.M. myself.

I just bought my own set of Ulterior Motive cards.
Just read through them all, lots of great twists and ideas.
Looking forward to using them. By the way did you sleeve your cards?
If so what size sleeves did you use?

Sorry can't help with the sleeving issue, as I don't sleeve.

However, to further whet everyones appetite, we recently played the 'Mating Season' game from Breeding Pits with Ulterior motives and it was absolute chaos but very enjoyable!

Things all wne wrong when my opponent opened the trapdoor that was the target of his mission. (I told him 'Don't you go down that trapdoor' but he didn't listen) The trapdoor was in fact the 'Soul Drain' which proceeded to suck half of each warband into it and out of the game and drag everyone else into a very small area with the now enraged  Devourers!By the end of the game we didn't have enough men standing to carry away the loot so left some treasure behind. Really good game.

I can't recommend Ulterior Motives highly enough, it just changes every game into something more. Yes you have to get off with treasure but there is something else you can do too and there is still that pesky adversary in the way.
