Victorian Steel Rules......opinions on game scale
« on: 11 November 2015, 09:19:18 PM »
How well (or not) do the Victorian Steel rules scale to smaller engagements?

I love the look of the big battle engagements with multibased figures but would the rules cope with single based figures in a "big skirmish" style game?

Is there any reason the rules would not work by stepping everything down 1 structure level so a "Brigade" (should really be battalion anyway no?) becomes the company and the "Company" becomes a platoon?

Well, the Grimsby lot, written my Dave and Malc always seem to play on a very large table in 28mm  :)

Not sure how helpful that is.

I reckon you could go with any scale really. 28mm is the best looking IMHO :)

Darrell.

They work with any scale it's more about bases  equalling a unit,so if you use say four to six figures to represent a unit ( Take your point on brigades by the way it's just difficult to find an all encompassing term for a rub or impi or boxer mob !) and have four eight or twelve units to a brigade that will work fine. We have played boer war actions with eight stands of British against the same number of Boers and had a perfectly good game
I hope that helps?

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. The term "unit" makes it easier to envisage, classing 3 or 4 single based figures as a platoon sized "unit" gives 12-16 figures for imperial companies which seems about right for a skirmish game and then 24-32 for tribals/natives.
I have ordered a copy of the rules so am looking forward to trying to work out some forces at this lower scale.
