New to frostgrave
« on: 24 February 2016, 03:02:54 AM »
Hello all I'm new to the forum and this awesome game so I'd just like to introduce myself.
So I ordered the rule book, the lich lord campaign, a box of cultists and a box of soldiers just after the holidays and I've put together two warbands so far an illusionist and a thurmaturge (spelling?). Well I've gotten two games insofar one with each warband and I've got to say this is a great system of gameplay, easy to pickup and also teach others to play. As far as house rules go I haven't gone overboard cuz like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I did come up with a couple things to spice up our games some so here they are:
First I added a new soldier type an 'ogre' basically I just copied the stats from a snow troll, added a couple special rules: large (takes up two soldier spaces), huge weapon (treat as 2 handed weapon), strong (no move penalty when carrying treasure) and put a 300gc price tag on it. One of my opponents thinks it's too OP and the other one thinks their fine. Although I haven't actually had a chance to play a game with him yet I'd like your guys opinion on it what do yal think? Too OP? Over costed or under costed? Or just fine? Feedback is appreciated.
The only other house rules that we have are related to the campaign just by limiting what the spellcasters can do after games like limiting the stores the can visit and limiting the number of items they can buy and a couple other little changes that aren't really worth mentioning.

That's basically it so I just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello to all of you.
Until the next time happy gaming
Weez

Welcome to the snow crusted area.  ;)

It seems, that later in campaigns money is not that big a problem, so maybe the price is not such a problem. How about restricting it in numbers to a maximum of - say 1 or 2?
best wishes

Hi,

I love the idea of a bigger "soldier".

Also taking up an extra slot is a great way to limit this type of new soldier.

Some time ago i started a topic on new soldiers but we didn't think about bigger things taking up multiple slots.

Maybe Joe can use this inspiration in one of his coming expansions. :-)

Enjoy!

Hey ElOrso,

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying Frostgrave!

I think the idea of a 'ogre' soldier is pretty cool, but I think it is perhaps a bit powerful. The problem isn't so much the cost, or even the stats, it is the potential those stats have. With a few spells, or a magical item, he could become very powerful. At minimum, I would say that the ogre shouldn't be allowed to carry an additional items.

That said, taking up two soldier slots is a big price to pay and many people would probably rather have a knight, a marksman, and 100gc, so maybe it isn't overpowered. Sounds like it needs play-testing!

My advice for your campaign, use the ogre against the opponent that doesn't mind, when playing against the opponent that does, replace him with two other soldiers (ogres often get drunk at inappropriate times and miss battles)...

@joe5mc
I've had the idea in my head for years with skirmish games about making them fun and not overly complicated & you hit that dead center with this game!!!

Hats off to you Sir!!!
