Watchtower WIP
« on: May 23, 2016, 11:15:43 AM »
Hi everyone!
I've finally reached a good milestone with this my 15mm project. I spent some good time looking for references for concrete architecture, and i've to say that the internet has a surprisingly low amount of references on the theme.
I decided to go for a simple design at the end, mostly because it has to be easily castable and it is really setting-free, hitting a larger market when out.

What i've done so far is this: mostly ceramic plaster, some resin inserts, that i did a while ago and are used for all the sculpt i'm doing for White Dragon Miniatures.

The tower will have a concrete roof and some inside floor too. For now they are still in my mind, though.

This will follow a series of buildings i'm sculpting for WDM and that gradually will be put on the shelves, one after another.

C&C really appreciated, expecially considering the WIP state of the build, any hint or suggestion on the kind of detailing is greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Jack

Can't wait!

I'm working on a sort of near future, water wars project at the mo and you're building will be great (I'm also stealing the Zvezda truck conversion from your Facebook).

How well would these scale with closer 18mm figures (say GZG)? I know the WDM infantry are true 15mm.

Great stuff.

Thanks!

I'd say it works well with those too! And i didn't find such a different between WDM and GZG minis honestly... The biggest difference is in the proportions, imho.

Very nice - I have the White Dragon minis from the KS, and this is interesting.
Funnily enough I am working on the equivalent construction to the tower for an alternate history Chinese medieval project.

Thanks Jack - I haven't seen any in the flesh, so it's more of proportion than a height difference? I don't mind that so much. I've been avoiding them so might get some ordered!

i've got those too, and now WDM is already selling some of my stuff! This one (together with a few other builds) will follow in the next wave! :)

Honestly, if you don't mind the fact that 15mm resin is REALLY fragile (well i use to 3D print figures, that is even more fragile!), those are the most detailed figures you can find in that scale. I'm really impressed by those little fellas. :)

I know, I saw the first one and am resisting temptation - for now!
Well done - they're grand.

The concrete casting look is very effective. If I may ask how did you create the effect?

It's as simple as it should be: Just create a "negative" form with plastic tiles, then pour the ceramic plaster in it. This tower isn't the easiest shape to recreate, for sure, but for walls it's actually incredibly easy to do!
Moreover, if instead of plastic slates you use balsa wood planks, you get this other effect:

Hope this helps, ask for any clarification =)
