The 1st Battle of Newbury 1643 - Scenario
« on: 07 June 2016, 05:33:43 PM »

http://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/1st-battle-of-newbury-1643-scenario.html

A nice change of pace at Yarkshire Gamer after months of Jutland madness. It's time to dust off the 28mm ECW collection and don the buff coat for a spot of table top action.

I have gone for a refight of 1st Newbury which is a decent size game, it nearly stopped before it started, I had set up the terrain and the Royalists when I realised I had forgotten where I had put the Parliamentary forces. Quick search and they were located under my WW2 Italians, Game on.

This post covers the set up for the battle with Terrain map, background and full orbats. Lots of pics as well.

Enjoy, Regards Ken

Fantastic post on your blog sir and great pictures...

as a recent joiner to the ECW period cant understand why I didn't get involved earlier. There is something enormously satisfying seeing hundreds of troops on a big battlefield.

I look forward to part 2

The set up and figures look great. Can't wait for the write up of the battle and some more eye candy.

With regards your comment on Cropredy, I well recommend the following PDF if ever you get to visit and walk the area:
http://www.battlefieldstrust.com/media/718.pdf

Great work, very impressive - though I'd be tempted to suggest different orbat stats & details for the London Trained Bands  :)

Cheers LCPL McDoom,

I hadn't seen that pamphlet in full before so cheers for that, it has the modern day map in it that I do have, it's the change in features from then to now. However great news on that front, an old gaming friend works as an historian in the local area and is a bit of an expert on the battlefields around there and has offered to take me around and interpret, which is fantastic.

Regards the LTB, I don't know if you saw in the write up my caveats regarding the orbat, eg the Stats were done at random and units were amalgamated so not all units at the battle are represented as individual units. I wasn't too happy (as a staunch Royalist) when I rolled a 1 on Ruperts Horse  !

We do the random rolls to avoid messy arguments about troop class / ratio - it can be so easy to spend 2 hours setting up, 5 hours arguing about the pike : shot ratio or training of a particular unit. Does that explain it ?

Regards Ken
God Save the King !
