CSIR Question - San Giorgio Battalion
« on: 02 November 2012, 03:43:32 PM »
I have been searching for information on this formation and the only thing I can find is that the unit had 60 to 61 L3/35 tanketes and almost all were junk by the end of October 1941.  What I am trying to find out was the mix of L3/35 tanketes that they had.  Did they have the flame thrower version?  The order of battle for a L3/35 tank battalion called for 16 of the flamethrower variants but these were in addition to the 61 "normals".  Were these all the dual MG versions or were any of them equipped with the 20mm AT guns?

Anyone have an idea?

Hi, The San Giorgio got only the mg version (in the total of 60 there were 5 radio model - 1 for each squadron and 1 for the comand)
The 20 mm was used only on the north african front.
Let'me know if you need any other information.
Regards

Diego

Thank you.  That is useful information.  Do you have a source for that I can look up?

Hi sorry for the late reply but i got an eye surgery.
No I got the informations from different source (books about other unity that were connected with them or veteran memories) but don't know of a specific book on the San Giorgio.
I can add some other information: the crews on foot were grouped with a detachment of bridge engineering and fought as infantry.

Each squadron got a name:
1 - Delle Armi
2 - Medaglie d'oro
3 - Savoia
4 - Novara

I'm not able to say if the captured T34's used by the italian army are related to San Giorgio battalion

I hope all went well with the surgery.

Again, great information.  Thanks.  Did they have any information on what actions that each squadron took part in up to October 1941?  Specifically which one(s) supported Pasubio?

Thanks again.

Chris, i've not find that information.
I asked to the owner of a military bookshop about any book on the San Giorgio battalion but his answer was "there are not book on the subject that i 'm aware of".
I 'have found reference about the elements of 3rd bersaglieri regiment that supported the Pasubio.
If you could give me any hint or reference about the date or operation maybe something looking for that I could find something.
Surgery went well but i need some time to be really operative.
Thanks for asking.

Diego
