Vorghan the Slayer (warning:gratuitous topless shots)
« on: 04 October 2016, 11:01:23 AM »

Somebody get that guy a shirt before the internet melts down in uproar.  ;)

Vorghan the Slayer is the latest addition to my chaos army. He was the freebie on the cover of White Dwarf, the only reason I bought it to be truthful. Kneel before his martial prowess you insignificant, weak fools - ah sorry, got a bit Khorney there.

There's more images on my blog and I captured quite a few in progress shots so you can see how I painted it. The flesh is particularly nice and easy to do.

Awesome pj, and thanks for the step-by-step guide. It took me a while to find out how the #^^&*)^() sprue parts work together alone  ;D.

The mini really has tons of character. It's twice as good with a lick of paint, but what really maks it work for me is the glorious base.

I have a question about painting pale flesh ( as explained in your excellent and inspiring blog ): You said you mixed at several stages some matt varnish trhought the paint. Maybe I didn't look good, but is that because of the structure of the paint - makes it more smooth to the eye - or is it to make the skin glow a bit, in order to get it more lifelike?

I recently got my hands on one of these as well. I figured that for a couple of €, you couldn't go wrong and I was not disappointed. It absolutely is a cracking sculpt and the pose just spoke to me.

However; I am in the middle of converting him into Khârn the Betrayer (just because I can) and I soon found that these new, single-pose, types of GW minis might be beautiful as is, but they're female dogs when it comes to converting them.

Nothing I can't handle, but when everything is integrated, it's impossible to do even a mild repose of these guys without cutting, hacking and resculpting. And then you've got to make sure the flow of the anatomy is not fouled up by your handiwork.

It does not help that this particular guy is absolutely gigantic either. I mean; he dwarfs even biggerized Terminators! So spliced-in parts are all out of proportion and need adjustments themselves.

Just count yourself lucky to have decided to paint him as he comes on the sprue... ::)

Your paintjob is outstanding though! The skintones you've achieved are excellent and the rest is obviously wonderful too.

So; a great sculpt and a fantastic paintjob. That makes for one stellar miniature for sure!  :-*
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks guys.  :)

Converting it would be a task indeed, but a weapon and head swap would be reasonably okay I thought. Anything else you would have to be very skilled/dedicated.

The base is simply a mix of pva and snow flock, with a tiny bit of water effect added.

Adding matte varnish to the paints gives a number of benefits. It acts like a glaze medium, thinning the paint but keeping it more viscose than just water would. It also extends the drying time a little. Finally, and obviously, it mattes down any shine from inks, other glazes, etc.
