Scola Scutariorum Clibanariorum, 28mm
« on: January 18, 2017, 11:33:11 AM »
Finished these guys up earlier this week. It's about time, they've sat half-painted for about a year like so many of the other minis I'm getting finished up here in the last couple of weeks.

In any case, I present Scola Scutariorum Clibanariorum of the Eastern Roman Army. My painting scheme is taken from Christa Hook's plate in Osprey's Late Roman Cavalryman.

Quote
MacDowall, Simon. Late Roman Cavalryman AD 236-565. Illustrated by Christa Hook. Osprey Publishing, Oxford. 2007. Plate G.
[mod edit: copyrighted material removed]

That is the painting guide I used. These guys are probably in parade kit, Simon MacDowell notes that "Given the occasion and status of the unit, the soldier's equipment, which shows Persian origin, is far more uniform and elaborate than one might find in a line unit on campaign." (McDowell, LRC, p. 54) I took that a bit further by assuming many of these guys may be Persians and/or Anatolians themselves, therefore I varied the flesh tones using Foundry's Near Eastern Flesh, North African Flesh, and Mediterranean Flesh.

For the command, I used Gripping Beast figures. The rank and file, which as you can see are sculpted to Hook's plate above, are from Newline. They're really a great deal at 20 GBP for 10 mounted figures. Too bad they don't have a matching command.

The command had cast on shields but for the rank and file I used Gripping Beast Byzantine bucklers. Here Andy deserves a shout-out and big thanks, since he sent me those at no charge when I called and asked if he had any shields that would match the cast-on ones. Thanks Andy!!!!!

Commander
His jewels on his helmet are temporarily dull: I'm waiting for gloss coat to arrive and each one will get a dab. But no big deal for now - they're painted in the traditional way of three colour shades with the third being a dot in the darkest shade.

Musician

Adjutant... who, well, looks undead in this photo

Rank and File
For the pennants, I simply made spaghetti one night and saved the tomato paste tube. The cut it open, cleaned it well and cut strips that I primed. Twisted them on with a dab of glue and viola, pennants. That tip came from somewhere on the google machine that I can't remember now.

The Full Monty

Aaaaaand ... another unit finished! Finally!

Hope you like :D

You go to war with the figures you have, not the figures you wish you had!

Wow, thanks guys! To be honest, I really didn't think this unit was going to turn out at all. Had a lot of problems, yellow is very difficult to paint and had to repaint the kontos. And I just thought they were kinda... meh. I'm glad, however, that they turned out in the final stretch of highlighting and I'm very happy you all like them.

Unfortunately, the Aegis Spray varnish tends to dull the Vallejo metallics that I used. However, one of my pet-peeves is paint chipping on the game table or heads and spears falling off. So, I made the trade off with the spray varnish and there was just too much metal to go over them again. I'm just happy they're finally done.

Thanks again for the support!

Great work on these - especially liked the horse armour.   You must be a patient man!   The Newlines came out very well.

Question on the copyrighted material for future reference:

What are the terms regarding posting pictures and quotes for reference? I try to be pretty careful with that stuff, both with copyrights and potential plagiarism, and that's why I gave full sourcing above. I don't want to run afoul of copyrights but if it is illegal to post a quote or plate for reference with full accreditation given, then I wouldn't be able to publish my dissertation.

Clarification would be nice for future posts, thanks.

Great! Thanks for the clarification. I definitely don't want to get anyone in trouble and always better safe than sorry.

I predict in the future, some jerk like Games Workshop will state that their miniatures, whether painted by the purchaser or not, are trademarked and under copyright and you can't post them without their permission - which will be given, of course, at their website for 24.99 a month. Just wait...

Any way, enough of hitting the equine carcass with the mace. Jeez, I'm hijacking my own thread :D

Thanks Mith. Yes, painting every other plate in the row did get tedious but my four-year-old has taught me patience :D. Yes, I like the Newlines, I have a lot of their late Roman infantry and Goths. While I probably wouldn't use them on my command stand, they are great for rank and file troops and you can't beat the price of them.

They look good and I can't believe those Newlines match up so well with the GB ones.
And what is it with you and choosing the most ridiculously complicated shield designs?  o_o
I go mad just thinking about doing that stuff myself...
