« on: February 19, 2017, 10:43:49 PM »
As said, which 28mm figures could be used for the (roman and/or batavian/german) armies of the Batavian Revolt

Some suggestions then…

Romans: Almost any range labelled "Early Imperial Roman" is suitable. Perhaps go for a slightly earlier look, with more chainmail than segmented armour and larger or even oval shields for the legionaries. Best avoid 'up-armoured' soldiers, i.e. those wearing bracers (manicae) and reinforced helmets, since such equipment likely wasn't introduced until the early 2nd century. Other than that, very few limitations.

Germanic tribes/auxiliaries: The Batavians may(!) have looked quite distinctive, even when in Roman service. There are some curious pieces of equipment like metal helmets covered in fur, which are thought to follow Batavian fashion. This reenactment group provides some useful information. But on the tabletop such detail's easily lost, so you can use any auxiliary to represent Rome's (former) allies. There is even less evidence for Germanic fashion of that period. Again, almost any range of "Ancient Germans" will work. If you're aiming for authenticity, avoid the 'cavemen' look of Copplestone's work for Foundry – although they're quite fun figures. ;)

hey guys,
i have done this in 15mm......mix Germans and auxiliaries equipment to give a "special" look to your army.

The pure german stay as they are but the revolting batavian can be featured with more germanic equipment than before they were in the roman army.
May be some german shields incorporated into the auxiliary units (oval shields)
Or true german heads (hairy or with hairtail) with aux body and roman equipment. Add some fur on them and the job is done. The opposite can be done too a german body with a roman head and equipment.... ;)

Cheers

You will need to model the leader of the revolt the prince of the Batavi Gaius Julius Civilis (an adopted Latin name) as a large man wearing Imperial armour, long red hair and an eye patch - marvellous!

Thanks for the info about Civilis but what about the figures to use (as was the original question?)

Depending on how much customizing you want to do if you buy some BTD Roman auxillaries (Early Romans) and Ancient Germans (clothed- those with furs look good) and do so head swaps and a bit of green stuffing of beards and pants on to bare legs, maybe  a bit of additional fur over some of the Roam mailed bodies and you get a good result.
Plus they are 50% off at the moment. There are a lot of different poses to choose from.

Also Warlord Games do some 'germanic heads' which they use to 'german' up their celt sprues and these can make some nice additional head swaps.
I did a unit of 24 a while ago. Still not finished painting them but they look the business - at least to me. I'd post some pix but Flickrs photo editing suite is broken down at the moment.

I would suggest trying a kit-bashed mix of Warlord plastic Germanics and Roman auxiliaries - but I'm not absolutely certain the figure sizes are compatible? Can anyone else help with this?

Here's some pix of a few of the minis, they are patiently awaiting their turn in the painting pile, I'll get round to them eventually but you get the gist.

finally the leader  as he comes straight from a Foundry German character pack.

Job well done with those convertions. :-* :-*
Mix some pure germans with skins (BTD are great for that) for a small variety of tribesmen who joined the revolt and thats it. :)
