Order Of Playthru???
« on: 14 March 2017, 08:39:43 AM »
I was asked a question so I figured ...ask yall...
with the folio out now (having all the ebooks in print is fab) is there an order a starting player should use
for all the books? ex: is it ok to use sellsword rules with main book scenarios?

thanks in advance for any help.   :)

Yes, it is okay.

But it is also smart to get a few games under your belt with only the main rules before you start adding additional rules. Sellsword for example definitely brings some additional rules to the table and for new players, it is smart to start with only the main rules and then add in things like Sellsword after about three games or so.

Build it up slowly.

I would also add that a captain costs 100 gc to hire. Hiring one right off with an apprentice, would leave a new wizard only 200 gc to form the rest of his warband. That would mean either all thieves, thugs, and warhounds with maybe an archer or crossbowman to start with or one or two elite members.

We played our previous campaign slowly, adding rules as we went. In our new campaign we are adding dark alchemy and sellsword rules right away. I feel adding the captain which has more character from the start adds to the 'story' even if the rest of the warband members will be few/cheap for some games. Starting with a small group and gradually expanding/upgrading (e.g. thief upgrades to assassin, thug to man-at arms etc.) is great fun too!

Agreed - we used the captain rules from Sellsword and new potions mechanism from Dark Alchemy as soon as they were available as ebooks - the same goes for the new base resources from Arcane Locations (the latter two also in Frostgrave Folio).
I've also used soldier types from Lich Lord, even though we haven't started that campaign yet.

However I'd say that any treasures specific to an expansion (Liche treasures, Breeding Pits counter spells, Forgotten Pacts demon names etc.) should only be available during the appropriate campaign - either by finding them on a treasure roll or buying them. Does this sound reasonable?
