Broken Legions - help needed in identifying troops
« on: October 08, 2019, 09:10:57 PM »
So, I am a fantasy and sci-fi gamer mostly, so I have to ask some help to match historical stuff with Broken Legions profiles.

While Soldiers of the Eagle are clearly Imperial Romans, I have some doubts about a few model types:
Eques Numidarum sounds like guys on horse. Baleares (can't find any info), Numerus look like they're barbarians (link), Sagittarius sounds like guys with bow.

My main point is: what kit I should get to represent these? Beside the obvious Roman Legionaries?

I don't get what THE ORDER OF MITHRAS should represent. Dissident roman people?

Sons of Spartacus are gladiators. Easy enough.

What historical box should I get to represent BARBARIANS? Celts? Vikings? Any suggestions in kits to get?
What about Wulfkind? Are they supposed to be werewolves? Any suggestion in human-sized ones? All those I can think of are quite large fantasy ones.

Argonauts are greeks, I suppose.

Any suggestions for kits/range to use as Dacians?

Cult of Seth sounds like Egyptians. Any suggestion on a range? Plastic would be great.

What Parthians are supposed to be? Since they have access to a Lammasu I suppose they're Assyrians or the like. Again, any suggestions on some range?

Hope this post will not upset historical gamers.

I probably shouldn't jump in here, as I don't know anything about Broken Legions, but what the heck, here I go anyway!

Eques Numidarum sounds to me like Numidian horse, think North African light horse, mostly unarmoured guys in simpe tunics, mostly armed with javelins and shields.

Baleares is most likely Balearic slingers.

Agree that Sagittarius is probably archers.

Barbarians would be anyone not 'civilized' - so not Roman or Greek.  Celts and Germans, certainly, but could also include Dacians or Africans.

Loads of options for Dacians.  Try Warlord Games, Wargames Foundry, Old Glory, or for that matter just about any company that makes Romans and their opponents and type 'Dacian' into the search box!

Parthians are from the Middle East, tend to have a focus on light horsemen, especially mounted archers.  They wiped out a major Roman army commanded by Crassus around the time of Julius Caesar.  Not exactly Assyrians (Parthians came along centuries after the end of the Assyrian empire) but from the same general geographical area.

Some I can help with:
Eques Numidarum - Berber cavalry (from modern Algeria)

Balearus - Light infantry (uually slingers)

Sagittarius is indeed an archer
or

Numerus - Allied barbarians

Dadlamassu has done a top job of explaining it already.

I just mean to add you can find Balearus often mentioned as balearic slingers.

I would go and have a look on Warlord games website.

They have boxed plastic sets that will fill most of the lists. Warlord often also sell individual sprues which might be all you need to make up a warband.

The other good manufacturer of plastic ranges would be Victrix.

I don't know whether there are any good plastic ranges of the egyptians. Warlord have a good selection of metal models.

I am not aware of any plastic gladiators. I would look at Foundry.

Parthians are a Persian army they were most known for their armoured cataphract nobles and horse archers.
