Asurman Blue Substitute?
« on: July 05, 2017, 03:26:53 PM »
Ugh!

I'm in the middle of a large terrain project and have run out of Asurman Blue. It appears that Drakenhoff Nighshade is _not_ the same.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can use? Does Privateer Press or Vallejo carry anything comparable to the old Asurman Blue wash?

It's my understanding that the Army Painter range is the same as the old GW wash rang (the one with Thrakka Been and Asurmen Blue).
I've not yet run out of my GW washes so can't confirm, but their blue might be worth a try

The Army painter blue wwash is very good. I *think* it's the same but it's been so long since I had any GW washes I'm not sure. On the dakkadakka paint conversion chart they suggest that or Vallejo blue shade wash

What about Coat d'Arms? Are they the old GW range of paints? An era too early for Asurmen?

Most of the CDA range is a much older version of the GW range predating the Asurmen Blue washes.

However the Super Washes are a different, later addition to their range.

I've used the Brown, which is similar to the GW washes, dries matt and is somewhere between Gryphonne Sepia and Devlan mud, the Dark Brown is similar to Devlan mud, but more like an ink and dries a bit gloss - it doesn't "stain" in quite the same way as the Devlan Mud era washes.
I've not tried any of the CDA colour super washes.

As it happens, I've got a box of Army Painter washes on its way, with all their colored washes in it. If it arrives on time (I'll be off on vacation this weekend and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't ask the house sitter to do paint experiments, photographs and web postings for me lol ), I can do a comparison shot of the blue wash next to Assurmen Blue if you want... :)

That'd be fantastic!

I did a little comparison...Blue Tone by Army Painter seems to be the closest. I think adding a few drops of Nightshade to it would do the trick.

Yeah, the Army Painter Tones are all close matches to the previous version of GW Washes.

Therefore, they are good matches for Asurmen Blue, Devlan Mud, Badab Black, and so on. Whilst they may not 100% matches, they are certainly 99% close.
