Sometimes the the most surprising things pop up as one pokes about in the lives of on's ancestors.

Past weekend two of my Scottish relatives came to visit here in Sweden and brought with them the fruits of their family research. With their help I have now traced my great-great-great-great-uncle Brigadier John Pennycuick...



... who lead the 24 Regiment of Foot (South Welsh Borderers) to one of these glorious defeats which the British relish so much) during the 2nd Sikh war at the battle of battle at Chillianwallah 1849.

Do I need to tell you I feel a strong urge to start a new project?

I was quite amazed. I never thought before that I had any links to British military men nor India. And yes, that was quite a horrible battle. The the regiments of the brigade was almost wiped out. The brigadier son, Alexander, who was an ensign of the 24th, was also killed as he tried to retrieve his father's body.

In this link there is other interesting stuff about the brigadier's earlier endeavors against the Dutch end French on Java, which probably could make for some good skirmish level games.

That's pretty cool, finding this link. I should trace my family back, Dad's side hails from Yorkshire but his side of the fam have been in the Colonies since Jamestown.

 By coincidence I was researching Chilianwallah just this morning.

If you are looking for a new project, you could do worse than Sikh Wars. We've had a lot of fun with these and other wars in India, as part of the playtesting for Dr Mark Smith's collection of India scenarios (provisionally "Bloody Big INDIAN Battles!") due for publication some time in 2018.
