Twilight of the sun king question
« on: 11 May 2018, 11:48:51 AM »
I am looking for a simple set of rules to play Louis' wars with my 2mm. Twilight seems exactly what I am looking for, except that units are composed by two bases, right?

Problem is, my 2mm are obviously based as single battallions, so the "2 bases for each unit" of this ruleset annoys me. I would be happy, instead, if I could use 2, 3 or 4 battallions for each unit and just consider units as small, normal or large brigades.

So my question is: can you play Twilight with units composed not only of 2 bases, but also 3 or 4?

Hi Valerio,

In Twilight you can use any number and size of bases that you like as long as they are the same. It uses the idea of '2 bases' because the distances are measured in half the frontage of a unit. They are called 'Base Widths' (BW).

We have bases of 60mm by 30mm. So we sometimes use 1 base for a unit (often when we do a big game on a small table) in which case 1BW will be 30mm. On other occasions we might use 4 bases for a unit (for a small game on a large table and too look good) in which case 1BW will be 120mm.

So you can use anything you like. Your idea of 2, 3 or 4 battalions would be perfect. We have done a version of the Twilight rules for the ECW/TYW - they should be available soon. For this set we have based our 2mm on 1 big base of 120mm with 2, 3 or 4 ECW type 2mm units on. Often about 100 to 150mm frontage for a unit is good as this will mean most battles can be fought on a table 1.8m wide or less.

Many thanks! And congrats for your rules, pretty innovative mechanics!
