Uniform Question - British Infantry officers 1751-1768
« on: May 09, 2020, 08:37:05 PM »
A question or two for the collective mind

I'm using Franklin's British Army Uniforms 1751-1783 as my primary reference for a unit of the 35th Foot circa 1758.

He makes very little mention of Officers jackets pre 1768, and does not advise what colour their linings were, and the colour plates do not show any turnbacks so the colour can't be seen.

He does advise that from 1768 it was required that turnbacks and linings of skirts were to be white.

My question is for the pre 1768 period would the linings of officers jackets be the units facing colour or white ?

and a second question - would the gaiters for officers be the same colour as for their men, or would they have leave to source their own ?

and a piccie as this is a visual medium !!!

All thoughts welcome

I don't know off the top of my head but perhaps re-ask your question to the Lacey Coats page where French and Indian War folks hang out.  I think you may have better luck there.

The officers rarely wore their coats with the tails turned back. However a little of the lining would show sometimes, as on the figure you have pictured. British officers pleased themselves on campaign as regards the details of their dress, the result being quite a variety of lace patterns or no lace, for example. Consequently, you would not be wrong with any reasonable colour. What colours would be reasonable? The facing colour, or white, or the same red as the coat or a different shade of red.
