Op Compass 1940 Campaign - Game 9 - Grand Theft Auto
« on: 11 May 2020, 04:59:56 PM »

https://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.com/2020/05/op-compass-game-9-grand-theft-auto.html

Here's an up to date Battle Report, we finished this game back in February !

Anyway we continue our adventure in the early part of the Desert War, this time our scenario is based on a real life event where a broken down British Armoured Car hijacked an Italian Ambulance to use as a tow home.

It all goes down hill from there. As always there are full instructions to play along with the Yarkshire Gamer crew and a write up of the action.

Hope you get to roll some dice soon.

Regards Ken

I thought in the unlikely event your Rolls Royce broke down , RR would send out a service team free of charge!

And a low-loader with a vehicle-sized tarpaulin so that nobody could see that it was a broken-down RR!
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Many thanks all, it's really sad that this early period is so overlooked. If I had posted a link to a game with a King Tiger it would be on 2000 views  lol

Well MkVI Light Tanks, A9s and Tankettes need love too  :-*

I've come around to this conclusion myself recently. We once fought two games on the same table. The first was set in 1940 and involved blitzkrieging Germans against the BEF, no off table artillery, just infantry and armoured vehicles. Apart from a few broken windows and burnt curtains, the village under attack escaped pretty much unscathed. We then sent the Tardis forward to Crimbo 1944 in the Ardennes and just about everything got flattened, every weapon was so much more potent.
Thing is though, the 1940 game got you thinking a bit more about tactics and wotnot when trying to take a position, you just didn't have the wherewithal to stand off and blast it to bits. We're really getting back to that in our little early desert war campaign...
it's great fun.

The Desert war is on my to do list and with inspiration like this will be sooner rather than later. My main project is currently Sealion but will also involve the retreat to Dunkirk. Although very much skirmish in nature in Section through to Platoon level I quite see the point you make about flattening everything. I did a lot of late war games in Northern Europe 'a la' Rapid Fire and this did seem to be the case. I do enjoy more the thinking involved where the heavier late war support isn't available. Keep up the good work👍

I'm a big fan of the Early War stuff, it really changes the balance of a game, and when your infantry aren't toting bazookas, PIATs and fausts, even a really rubbish armoured vehicles is a potential monster. Chain of Command with a Panhard A/C and an Sdkfz 222 is a very different experience.
