Advice on Austrian Grenz at Tolentino 1815
« on: 23 May 2020, 10:50:40 AM »
Can some learned scholar please advise regarding the OOB on the probably/possibly/definitely unreliable Wikipedia...

Most of my literature points to 17 Grenz Regiments but this states #62?

Help gratefully received

I think that should be IR62 a line infantry regiment that had one battalion present. A quick look in Digby Smith's Napoleonic Wars Data Book does not have any Grenze battalions listed.

This is the book I am looking at

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Greenhill-Napoleonic-Wars-Data-Book/dp/1853672769/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=greenhill+napoleonic+wars&qid=1590258582&sr=8-1

His Austrian listing for Tolentino is -

Commander FML von Bianchi

FML Baron Mohr Light Division -
GMCount Starhemberg
9th Jagers (1 Btn)
Modena IR (1 Btn)
Hussar Reg Prinz Regent (6 sqdns)
1 Horse Bty (6 guns)
Pioneers (1coy)
GM Senitzer
IR 62 Wacquant (2 btns)
IR 48 Simbschen (2 btns)
IR 2 Hiller (2 Btns)
1 x Foot Bty (8 guns)

Division of GM Baron Eckhardt
IR27 Chasteler (2 btns)
IR3 EH Carl (3 btns)
IR Modena (1 btn)
1 Foot bty (6 guns)
GM Baron von Taxis
Dragoon Reg No 4 Toscana (6 sqdns)
Reserve Foot bty (8 guns)

I have no idea what the Modena infantry regiment was as it is not numbered I suspect it was either fromthe state of Modena or some kind of locally raised unit - I am sure there will be others on LAF with more knowledge on this.

I have no idea how accurate this  orbat is- generally the orbats for the bigger battles are pretty good but possible less so for the less well known battles

This link is to another (slightly different!) order of battle

According to Knotel "Uniforms of the World" in 1814 the uniforms for the Duchy (?) of Modena were Austrian in style - but there is no further info there.

I don't speak Italian but I found this on the internet which I think is a picture of the Modena infantry uniform as well as the duke.

Gentlemen, wonderful stuff thank you!  The members of LAF rarely fail.
