Searching for a 15mm Oliphaunt
« on: 23 July 2020, 05:50:44 AM »
Hello All,

A long term LOTR plan is to field forces for the Battle of the Pelennor fields.  I am searching for a suitable 15mm Oliphaunt.  The following toy model caught my eye.  For $8 bucks I figured it was worth the purchase to see if it would work.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016NY03DA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am seeking opinions if this works.  The model is fantastic, but I am concerned it represents more of the Peter Jackson's movie war beast than the book version.  Here is the size comparison.  Poor General Lasalle is acting in place for my lack of fantasy cavalry.

For any interested in this model for a 28mm project here is comparison with a classic Norman milite.

Thank for any thoughts

There's this by Battle Valour:

I've got some similar figures for my 15mm fantasy armies which I am also planning on using for the Battle of the Pelennor Fields (also a long term project). I thought they were Demonworld but I can't find them online.

Victrix and avenine do excellent war elephants in 28mm scale, would make perfect Mumaks at 15mm. big  but not too ridiculous
I have a bad case of prescient nostalgia. The future's not what it used to be.

I acquired some Aventine African elephants to be my 15mm Olipahnts.  They are very lovely resin models and more reasonable in scale then my toy Elephant above.   But I may still use big Molly as a true Fantasy Great Beast.

Here is how they compare to 15mm figures, foot and cav.  Jokes pending on why the French general is turning is head away.

And as a comparison they are as big as a house.

enjoy and thank you

That Aventine elephant looks just about perfect to match the description in the Lord of the Rings novel! I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it for the crew and equipment.

I have always thought that oliphaunts in LotR were just normal sized elephants, but seen from a hobbit's (Sam's) point of view they appear to be twice as big as a normal elephant. I may have that totally bass-ackwards though.

Either way, that elephant is a lovely miniature and I would love to see it in use on the tabletop.

I second the Battle Valor, I have two for my BV Orc tribe.  If however you large BIG monsters in your fantasy armies I would recommend a big 28mm elephant or even use the GW ones, which are lovely models.

If you look on my blog  www.warrenswargamerantings.blogspot.com you will see I am not afraid to use very large models in my 15mm world
