What are people using for 15mm infantry bases?
« on: 26 October 2020, 05:09:53 PM »
Hi Folks,

Does anyone have an inexpensive substitute for those Flames of War infantry bases?

I have a lot of new GZG infantry I would like to base.  There's got to be a cheaper and more accessible way than the Flames of War bases.

Metal or plastic, not paper or cardboard as that stuff bends with moisture.

Thanks heaps, folks!

Multi-based or single bases?

For single basing, I use 3/4” fender washers.  But someone recently pointed me to strike plates, and I’m likely to change to those.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081J8RL38/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_BlcMFbWS5TRED?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

For multi-figure basing I use Litko laser-cut bases.

You could use the credit card type lottery cards. They are a nice size and cut easily. The best thing is that they are free ;).I used to pick several up when i saw them in the shops.

Greetings ErikB,

I tend to individually base chaps unless modelled together so I use washers bought from eBay or sometimes odd hardware stores, they are generally 16mm diameter. Sometimes for larger things I also use renedra bases although their smallest circular they do CURRENTLY is 20mm. I overstate currently as I spoke to them just before the hiccup/snafu and they were looking at releasing smaller individual bases for this very purpose! Hopefully this is still happening and when everything settles a bit they may appear (I’ll email them at some point soon and ask).

That said you can often buy bulk loads of flames of war bases on eBay as people like me use the miniatures but not the bases. I’m considering 2mm thick MDF for my new AWI 15mm for simplicity and movement trays for Sharp Practice but miss the weight and slimline aesthetics of the washers as they worked well with my terrain mat.

I ordered metal bases, cut to size, from Shogun Metal Bases.

Great!  Thanks for the ideas.

Does anyone know the measurements for the 2, 3, and 4 person bases in Flames of War?

I have some at home but... I will be at work on this job for quite a while.

Oh, I meant to specify about 60x 4-person bases and 12x 2-3 person bases.  If my gun and mortar teams don't fit on those then I guess I'll try using a quarter.

Probably not much help, but I am basing my 15mm Bolt Action (PSC plastics) on Renedra 20mm round bases.

Of course, I have not actually painted them yet (give them a few more years to mature) but here are some GZG 15mm NSL power Armour on the same bases.

Nice job!

I have about 300 GZG minis to base and about 100 15mm Quar minis (from Zombiesmith).  That's what this is all about.

I am curious to find out if 20mm washers are more expensive than pennies.  If pennies are cheaper then that useless coin will find themselves useful again.  ;-)

Erik

Small 31mm x 24mm
Medium 31mm x 50mm (maybe 49mm if I’m being honest)
Large 50mm x 64mm

What odd sizes I thought they’d be 30x25, 30x50 and 50x65mm. But the measurements are on  the bottom from the outer edge not the inner, top usable surface so take away a mil or so for taper (sorry wasn’t thinking properly when I excitedly ran off to my lead mountain with a ruler).

I think this is because they are defined in inches, and fractions of inches.
