Muskets and Tomahawks: Gloucester gets a grating
Scenario 7 in our M&T campaign saw the British going on the offensive in early 1758, amounting a surprise attack in force on a Huron village. Their mission was to capture or kill one or both of the Huron war chiefs; the Huron had the objective of getting one of the chiefs and his family away to safety. I had painted up some brand new canoes as an escape route (thinking Last of the Mohicans here), but the Huron commanders decided not to humour me and just sent the troops running for the woods instead!
The British arrived in force with their Mohawk allies and rangers in support. One Ranger unit was driven off by the first musket fire of the game (fluffed reaction test!) but the other did good service, with Ranger Captain Strathdon again acquitting himself well, personally felling a Huron with a tomahawk and defeating a band of warriors in combat.
Huron leader Young Pinconning took on the Mohawk to buy time for his fleeing villagers, but caught an unlucky tomahawk in the head and fell mortally wounded. His surviving warriors then took a charge from Ensign Gloucester’s redcoats which resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. The bloodthirsty Gloucester then decided to take on the surviving Huron by himself. This didn’t go well, although he fulfilled his blood lust intrigue just before dying!
However, by this point, the other Huron leader, Creeping Wolf, and his family had escaped off the table, fulfilling their objectives. A successful game for both sides! We are hoping to play the final battle of the campaign next week.
