Miniatures for Gothic War (535–554)

Hello All,

What miniature ranges would be proper for Byzantine and Gothic forces during the Gothic War (535–554)?

Would the Byzantines appear as late Roman infantry?

any scale works I am looking for images for than anything.

Aventine Miniatures is in the process of releasing Early Byzantines in 28mm.  Atheling has painted up some infantry from it - splendid painting of splendid figures - if you search for his handle here.

As has been said the recent Aventine range is bang-on for the tine period plus are beautiful and relatively cheap metals. Footsore are good too.  Footsore produce a nice range of Goths but is you wanted to cut cost Gripping Beast produce 3 boxes of Gothic/Dark age cavalry, a box of archers and one of infantry. Lots of variation and IMHO eminently suitable. I wouldn't look much further than these three.

The most specific range you are going to find is the Aventine range.

Louie, as you say, "very Late Roman in appearance". Only to be expected as the so-called Byzantine Empire is just a pretty-seemless  continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire, and hence the army is "evolution not revolution". If you opt for Aventine the infantry is now a pretty complete range, the cavalry is just starting to appear.

While I do not plan to collect the minis, 15mm is my weapon of choice  , I always like to use miniatures as a period reference.  Having the sculpts and well painted units helps me bring alive the historical reading.

If 15mm is your preferred scale I suggest you look at "War and Empire III; the Dark Ages" produced by Forged in Battle and sold by Westwind. Very nice figures .

Duh! On my part!! I've been looking for the Forged in Battle ranges for a while but on the West Wind site

Atheling, glad to have helped.  I'm still a confirmed 28mm gamer for ancients/medieval but the Forged in Battle stuff has nearly tempted me into a smaller scale.  Maybe when I am inspired into a new period where I can buy a pair of matched armies and 28mm would be ruinously expensive .  Anyway, still got Late Achaemenid Persian, Spartan and 1-3rd - Century AD German to paint, plus I am determined to buy and paint an Aventine 6th century Byzantine force.

The Aventine stuff is the business for Early Byzantines. I know from regular communication with Keith and by default Adam that a lot of research has gone into the range. That is one possible reason why the cavalry have been delayed a little.
