“Bring on the Empty Horses!”
« on: 28 December 2021, 11:38:06 AM »
My latest blog post describes creating bases of “empty horses” for the dismounted dragoons in my Polish 1620s army.  It includes the origin of the phrase “empty horses”, and also how I made the horse holders swappable. See all of this, and more pics, here:

Very nice. I need something similar myself, but for some dismounted cavalry figures, so I'll look at your blog with interest.

Lovely  :)

I think personally I would’ve put the horses on separate bases as well so they could be used as set dressing elsewhere. A fully scenic base does look the job though  8)

This has got me thinking about what I may do myself. A friend has told me that at one stage a manufacturer sold separate castings of stirrups with a section of the leathers attached, which you could add to your horses if you were using them as 'empty' ones. Does this ring a bell with anyone? My friend unfortunately can't remember which manufacturer it was.

Thanks, Paul.  I’ve not heard of the separate saddle/stirrup extras before, but they sound a great idea.

Lovely  :)

Cheers, Oshiro. That is an interesting idea. I would need to find a way to still have each horse tethered. Perhaps each tethered individually?

Charming work  :-*

Many thanks, Atheling.

Very nicely done :)

Cheers, Malamute.

Maybe a slightly longer base and each horse is tethered to it (rock, tree stump etc)?

Splendid job on the horses and groundwork Andy. (And as mentioned on Fb, great use of the figures too :))

Good thought 👍.  I have a couple of the Avanpost ‘empty horses’ left and I think doing them up as singles would be great for skirmish level games where a single character may need to dismount.

Splendid job on the horses and groundwork Andy. (And as mentioned on Fb, great use of the figures too :))

Thanks, Richard 👍.  Much appreciated.

Well put together :-* :-*

Cheers, Anderson Collection, very kind.

Glad you like it, Racm32 👍.  Yes, I can imagine it would be great for WW1.  I’m sure there will be more documented about how the horses were meant to be dealt with when the cavalry were dismounted in 14-18.

Excellent idea, and striking execution!
