Historically, said local landmark has been used for centuries to light beacons in the 16th century to alert locals about movements of the Spanish Armada, and later as part of a chain of high features in the south of England linking Plymouth and Portsmouth to the Admiralty in London via a line of ‘telegraph’ or signal stations for communication with Royal Navy commands back in the 18th-19th centuries.
