Battle of Telegraph Hill 1776 - Devon Wargames Group
« on: 16 June 2025, 02:33:35 PM »
This weekend gone I had the pleasure of wheeling out the new AWI collection at club in a fictitious engagement modelled on that fought at Chatterton's Hill during the Battle of White Plains in October 1776.

As well as sorting out the forces for the game, there was a certain level of getting back up to speed with the rules in use, namely Rise & Fight Again by Stand to Games.

If you would like to know more then just follow the link to the club blog.

Looks great!
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

question - the telegraph wasn't invented for another 50 odd years... what is the hill named after exactly?

The original telegraphs were towers with signal arms mounted on them. It was a semaphore style of operation.

As mentioned in the AAR, ‘named after a well known local landmark’, thus no relation to the historical invention of said telegraph, or any relation to places in 18th century America, and perfectly fitting for a ‘fictional’ action.

Historically, said local landmark has been used for centuries to light beacons in the 16th century to alert locals about movements of the Spanish Armada, and later as part of a chain of high features in the south of England linking Plymouth and Portsmouth to the Admiralty in London via a line of ‘telegraph’ or signal stations for communication with Royal Navy commands back in the 18th-19th centuries.

Hi Chaps,
Thanks for your comments and glad you liked the game. My AWI collection will be a theme going forward as I look to add to the collection and put together some larger battles.
